Favorite Antonov?

Sun Jul 27, 2003 9:27 pm

So what´s your favorite Antonov (people you have nothing else to say than,
"none", please don´t post).
Mine is the An-225, amazing size, I would love to put GE/RR engines on this bird and see how big difference it would make....

Hi

Can't say that I'm much of an Antonov fan given their crash history. Sorry.  Sad

What "crash history"?!

My favorites would include the -124 and -70.

An-12.

They just go on and on and on. No modern aircraft could take so much battering, then be patched up with string and solder to fly on...

(Shame about the dirty old engines)

I'm a fan of their new developments including the AN70, 140, and the new RJ program....But of course the 225 is an amazing airplane. I have read in an international cargo magazine that an AN124-300 is in the development stages, and it will include western engines and avionics...This aircraft will be quite an leap forward for Antonov...

My favorite Antonov is the An-22! First and only time I've seen one live was on May 25th this year at Schiphol. You'll find one of the photos I took that day here http://www1.airpics.com/showimg.php?imgid=39947. The spot this was taken from is at the end of Aalsmeerderweg, when the Antonov was about to enter apron S in front of the Matrinair Cargo building. More photos of the An-22 and the trip report from Schiphol, you can find here http://www.plane-spotter.com/Reports/index.htm

My favorite Antonov-designed plane: the An-124 Ruslan. The Ukrainian government has been very happy the An-124's are earning lots of hard currency revenues for carrying outsized cargo all over the world on behalf of companies like Air Foyle HeavyLift. It's getting quite mundane to see Volga-Dnepr An-124's parked on the ramp at Moffett Federal Airfield in Mountain View, CA.  Smile

Forgot to mention.. since someone already has a thread on it- would it be possible to ever ride on an AN-124 inflight? I'm assuming not in the states since they have to get DOT approval for a "one time freight flight" and all that.. I wonder how much it would cost if you could do it somewhere else in the world...

Antonovman, are you reading this?  Smile (want to thank you again too if you're the crewmember that showed me around the Richmond to Bismarck charter on June 7th)

At Ukraine's 10th independance celebrations I saw the 225 do a low level fly-by with a 124 on each wing-tip - tre cool !

That said my favourite is actually the humble An-2. The little plane that could ! To be more precise I like the float-plane version.

Mine is the An-2, the plane that holds the world record for longest production history. This venerable and versatile bird is a true classic.

I live in the San Francisco and occasionally see a An-124 at Moffett Field. It is owned by the Antonov Bureau. I don't know what it does there, but it is impressive sitting there bigger than everything! My favorite Antonov? That's hard for me to say, but I'd have to say the An-24. Rough and tough, they all just keep goin' on and on. I thought I'd read somewhere that an An-22 was going to be put back in service! That would be something to see!
