Favorite South Asian Airport?

Mon Jul 28, 2003 3:40 pm

I have been to some airports in South Asia (India):

Jaipur
Delhi - Indira Gandhi Intl
Mumbai - Chhatrapati Shivaji Intl /Sahar ... Juhu
Kolkata - Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Intl
Pune
Chennai
Hyderabad
Bangalore...

and I personally think Mumbai's domestic terminal is pretty good (Jet Airways...). I still want to visit Dhaka and Colombo's Bandaranaike Airport...they look really cool (I want to take Sri Lankan also  Smile/happy/getting dizzy...)...what 'bout you?

Have been to all of those.

Heh, I did a paper on S C Bose, even interviewing some of his surviving lieutenants. Any airport named after him doesn't inspire confidence - the man was rotten. Luckily he was incompetent too, so he never got to emulate his heroes (Stalin & Hitler) Actually, then it probably is a good name for CCU airport, incompetent and rotten...

CMB isn't bad, DAC/KHI are dumps. MLE is the nicest in S Asia that I've been to. Favourite Indian one is HYD.

Well A330Fan1, SriLankan Airlines is the best you can get ...

... CMB is ok, not very nice to get pictures or to stay there for several hours in the early morning. Same off course goes for DAC. CGP has even a more modern terminal than DAC and CXB (Cox's Bazar) is very small and nice.

My vote goes for MLE (Male, Maldives)! Not the airport it self, but the location of the airport is great!

Mumbai was a dump! It looked like something out of the 70's.

Mumbai's domestic terminal is pretty good (Jet Airways...).

Are you sure you went to the right terminal? That has gotta be the most pathetic excuse for an airport I have ever seen.

The only terminal at BOM that can somewhat claim to be of international standards is Air India's Terminal II-C, but even that has deteriorated recently on the arrivals side.

Only been to Colombo and Chennai and I found Bandarnaike to be much better. However, having said that, I agree with Swissgabe's comments, that there is much room for improvement. It can get quite boring in CMB. But I saw this on last weeks paper...

Third Phase of BIA expansion project

by Rajmi Manatunga

www.dailynews.lk (17/7/03)

Construction work on the third phase of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) expansion project will commence next week.

Director of the BIA expansion project O.J.S Perera told the Daily News that they hoped to start work on the passenger terminal building which constitutes the third contract package of the project, during the next few days. The third package consists of the expansion of the passenger terminal building, the renovation of 4,300 sq metres of the present building including the addition of an arriving passenger baggage belt and eight aerobridges.

Chairman of the Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd., Hemasiri Fernando said that initial work on the first two packages have already commenced. "The entire expansion project comprises four contract packages and one consultancy contract.

Following tender procedures, aviation authorities selected competent contractors for three contract packages including Tize-Mitsubishi and MAGA, a local contractor," he said.

The former is in charge of the repair work of the apron and runway and the improvement of utilities while the local contractor is carrying out the expansion of cargo facilities up to a capacity of 100,000 metric tonnes.

"Arrangements for the fourth contract package (improvement of air navigation equipment) have not been finalised yet. Recommendations have already been made and we are awaiting Cabinet approval," Fernando said adding that the project will be formally inaugurated next month.

The project with an estimated cost of US $ one billion is financially assisted by the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation.

Will be good not to board the planes by stairs, but I am looking forward to the aerobridges, which will be a welcome addition. Should be interesting, to see what the terminal will look like after all thw ork is done as well.

How about COK? A brand new airport with private initiative.

Did anyone watch Amazing Race? Other than BOM, the other airport featured was COK (Cochin, Kerala). The shots looked good, airport has ethinic design and from what I hear facilities inside are excellent. Airport is in service for last two years I think - so its kinda brand new.

B747-437B,

I agree that the airports are bad, including BOM...but the one good thing about it was the Jet Airways Premiere Club Lounge. The lounge in BOM seemed to be better than the lounges in other Indian cities. Sorry for the misunderstanding

Shah Amanat Chittagong Airport is really nice, and worlds better than Zia in Dhaka, which is a pit.
It is not enough to be rude; one must also be incorrect.

Have you been at CGP as well? I saw a viewing deck sign, have you been there? The airport was the most "modern" and "western" thing I have seen in Bangladesh.

You sure you meant BOM???not exactly what I would call nice. I know they do the best they can with what they have, but BOM? That is like saying you liked our old terminal in DTW. Now of course the new one is awesome, but the old one sucked. What about Bali? Nice approach. Of course the best Asian is either HKG or SIN

I am absolutely positive that you are mistaking this for something else then. The Jet Airways lounge in BOM is an absolute dump and is so inconvenient that I usually skip it and prefer waiting by the gate.

My favorite airport in South Asia would for sure be Chennai. The terminals are very good to naviagate, you don't need a taxi or bus to get from the international-domestic terminal. It is a very good airport.

Second is Hyderabad. Hyderabad is a small airport but is nicely kept and the new international terminal is very nice also.

Karachi and Bangalore are also top on my list.

I think it's sad to say Delhi and Mumbai should be the best airports in India or South Asia but they are actually the worse.

KHI was a suprising airport.

I like CCU myself, but then again, I don't mind it being a bit of a dump as until recently, all boarding was via airstairs rather than boarding bridge, which was great. LKO was also very nice, it seemed brand new when I was last there, although without much in the way of facilities and the like.
