Japan Airlines - JD, 3X, NU, JO Etc - Why Not JL?

Former JAS, JAA, JTA, JAC, JAL Express and even JALways, why don't they all operate as JL flight numbers?

I guess JAA still might have some political reason to operate flights from Japan into Taiwan (TPE and KHH). JALways might be used for charter and holiday destination flights ex Japan to destinations such as HNL, GUM, BKK etc.

But why does JAC, JTA and JAS still operate under IATA code NU, JD and 3X and not JL? I mean some JAC and JAS planes already got the JAL livery but still operate under separate code. Is there any particular reason? Is this going to be changed soon?

No one knows, no ideas?

I mean there has to be a reason. Guess costs are much higher operating all kind of different codes and the operation cost must be higher as well.

they should change it, the Chinese carriers that are merging into China southern are all now operating under the CZ code, but using their own equipment and corporate identities so the Japanese airlines are more eligible for the chnage.

The rights to operate some of those routes probably still rest with the pre-merger carriers, and don't automatically transfer to JL despite the commercial merger. That's likely the major reason why many flights are still using the old designator codes. A lot of bureaucratic red tape with the Japanese Ministry of Transport could be involved to get those rights "re-assigned" to JL. The transfer of the international rights might even involve re-negotiations with the concerned foreign countries, depending on the existing provisions in the air services agreements. All in all, it's much quicker and easier to slap the JL livery onto the old planes than to get the traffic rights sorted out.

Quote, "Phase 2 of the integration takes place from April 2004 when two new airlines will be established, Japan Airlines Domestic (in Japanese, JAL Japan) and Japan Airlines International. The international carrier will include international cargo operations. The new airlines will use only JAL flight numbers for domestic and international flights. All services will be unified under the JAL brand."

I'm not sure if that will include the affiliate airlines. If you read this page http://www.jal.jp/en/corporation/chuki04.html, they do include the affiliates in their business plan.

JO is a low cost division of Japan Airlines and fly mostly to leisure destinations with many of the flight attendents working being from other countries than Japan (eg Thailand etc). Like someone mentioned, I think they will integrate more of these brands next year when the merger between JAL and JAS is complete. I can see 3X merging with J-Air to fly turboprops and NU merging with JEX.

I think it looks like ALL, 3X, JD, NU, J-Air and JEX will be in one and JL will operate intl flights.

I just was asking my self the topic questions since I plan to visit Japan and I would like to fly with the YS1 from 3X. Getting fares on all the different airlines seems to be quite complicated, it would be much easier if all flights would have JL flight numbers.

The point regarding the traffic rights which has been mentioned by N949WP was also quite interesting.

I think that most of the airlines if not all will fly under JL flightnumbers but many will remain their own airline. Even before the merger with JAS, JAL owned, JEX, J-Air, JO, NU and EG. I think at least these airlines will remain.

I agree with you that it would make sense to merge more of these into JAL.
We will see what happens.

Hmmm...also found this on the same page:
"AFFILIATES: JAPAN ASIA AIRWAYS, a subsidiary serving Taiwan routes, will maintain capacity and introduce new aircraft. The Group will expand the role of JALways, a low-cost international subsidiary airline, and to introduce the airline to more routes to improve cost-competitiveness."

"AFFILIATES: We are also providing better regional services and we will maintain these through our affiliate airlines using smaller, commuter aircraft." Then it goes on to list the roles for each airline.

So it seems like they will continue to develop the affiliate airlines. Sounds confusing.... Well The777man said, we will have to wait and see.  Big grin

Swissgabe, I hope you will have a nice flight on the YS-11. I might also try to get a trip on it before they retire them.
