More Mexicana 757s?

Tue Jul 29, 2003 12:32 pm

Last saturday, when landing at MX), Mexico">MEX I saw two 757s by MX´s hangar in complete white scheme. Do any of you know what´s up with those planes? Im guessing there are a new addition to Mexicana´s fleet but I might be wrong. I´ll appreciate any info. Thanks!

Alvaro,

I really don't know if they are new to MX fleet (hope so!) But if not, these two 757s are...

1. B757 ex National Airlines, N541NA which arrived here in Dec of 2001.
2. B757F ex. Cameroon Airlines, arrived two weeks ago... while in return to ILFC....

More over there's a plan to bring two more 757s this year....

Another interesting thing that will show up at MX), Mexico">MEX it's a DC10-30 from Santa Barbara... it's schedule to arrive this month on the 30th to AeroMexico, heavy D check!

Well; personally I haven't heard anything about those 57's, but with the always-increasing traffic between Mexico and the US (mainly because of the so called "ethnic traveler") I'm not surprised with that fact. Hopefully more to come soon ! Way to go Mexicana !!!!!  Big thumbs up

Let my friend "plane-tracker" Ghost77 clear this issue for us.

btw, hi to everyone ! I'm newie on the forums and feelin' great to be here !!!!

They were 757-200s. And MX people were working on the planes. They seemed like in a hurry considering that I was there from 20:00 to 22:30.

The 757 is a great aircraft, I hope Mexicana does indeed keep adding new one's to their fleet. They look great in MX's colors, hopefully they could replace the A320 on their Mexico City-EWR flights with 757s.

Mexicana 757,

MX current 757 fleet is; 9....
- XA-TRA
- N101LF
- N380RM
- N755MX
- N758MX
- N762MX
- N763MX
- N764MX
- N765MX

----------------------------
I have some bad news for the 757 lovers with MX colours!  Sad

In May a B757 pilot from MX told and confirm me that MX was going to received two more 757s in this year....

Two hours ago just received and read an email that I really didn't like to read... since the 757 became my fav. airplane right after MX retired the 727.... now... I guess I won't have in the future a fav. aircraft.... well, in this email my friend heard from Mexicana's MX chiefs that the company is planing on retireing the 757 in the fleet by 2005... that's all I can tell... unfortunately I can't tell what aircraft they want for the replacement of the 57s...

I think I will start opening my eyes and heart to AM 737s, 757s and 767s...!

Having the A320, A319, and soon probably the A318, the 757 makes no sense. The logical step is to replace the 757 with the A321. Of course only if the capacity is still needed.

I wonder why MX wants to get rid of the B757's??? most of the examples they fly are fairly new, since they were built in the second half of the 90's. They are a great workhorse in the MX fleet and they have very good economics.

I know the A321 could give MX a fleet commonality, but lets face it, having the A320 with IAE V2500 engines and the A319 with CFM56 engines is not exactly a fleet commonality. Can you imagine the cost of having spares for each type of engine!!! About the A321 being considered as a replacement of the B757, I will say that for MX it is not the perfect replacement, since they operate from Mexico City, a hot and high airport, were the B757 performs well to destinations like YUL, YVR, PDX, etc. I will say that the reason for getting rid of the B757 (if they are going that way) is because they are getting a very good deal for the A321 or whatever aircraft they want to get... I mean, HP is replacing its B737 fleet with A320's, A319's and A318's, but they did not go for the A321 as a replacement of the B757 because they operate from PHX and LAS (two very hot airports in the summer) and they found that the A321 does not perform as good as the B757.

I don't know, I guess we will have to wait and see what MX plans are for the future!!!!

Rojo,

It's easy to guess why MX wants to get rid of the 57s... they only fly the Airbus 320 family.... 727s are gone... F100s will follow the same steps... so the 757 can't stay in the fleet... only if MX gets the 767 or 777 or 747 (considering it's cheaper than the 777) but they will never get this type of aircrafts...

MX is definetly searching for the fleet commonality.... and I could say that they are getting it...

I agree with you about MX having two different types of engiens in the A320 and A319s, that is not commonality, but I also think that when an airline have a large fleet up to 10 aircrafts per model., like MX with 12; A319 (and probably they will get more to replace all F100s), I think that cost in spares aren't that high... it would be more expensive when an airline only flies 6 A320 and 4 A319s with different engines, but that's not MX case. More over, having two different engines, Mexicana got the capacity to give MX service to more companies....

Off topic, today I received another e-mail, but this time are AM news... they told me that AM is looking forward to get the license to install new winglets in the 737s. They said that the first two new 737s will get WL in the US, but from the 3rd to the 15th they will probably be installed in Mexico City at AeroMexico's MX hangar... also with this license, AM will have the capacity to install WL to more new 737s or 737NG all ready in the air without WL....

Also, they say that the first 737 will arrive in the last two weeks or last week of September! In order to start service in October!

Try getting a A321 to fly nonstop from Cancun to Buenos Aires, the 757 makes much more sense for Mexicana than the A321. The performance and range of the 757 makes it much more suitable for hot and high airports and long routes.

Honestly I don't think Mexicana is going to make a move to A321's. The 757 fits just right in there.
Also consider its not only those 2 757 at the hangar, they have been adding more 57's to the fleet in the past years. I think the bid for MX is to stay with the 757, they also have to consider expansion plans for the future and the family 757/67 will help them a lot. Imagine if they get rid of those 57 and they plan on a heavy later on... no way.

BTW that white 757 has been since DEC 02 there all in white. It does seem to be a National.

Saludos

MX operates the 757 on some longer-haul routes, out of hot and high Mexico City airport, with very heavy loads......although the A321 is a good aircraft, it simply cannot operate many of Mexicana's 757 routes. While, in theory, it would be convenient for MX to fly an all Airbus A32X fleet, I do not think it is practical for the airline. I think that MX will continue to build up its 757 fleet for longer-haul flights and for routes where they need extra seating and/or cargo capacity and fly the 757 side by side with the A320 and A319 (just like NW, BA, and other airlines). There are many good oppotunities to purchase or lease 757s at bargain rates at the moment, and many of the available aircraft are quite new; lets see if MX takes advantage of this opportunity in the marketplace.

Since MX in the last 3 years it's been retireing almost every aircraft in their fleet, I do believe they will not stay with the 757... they are very nice and very efficient to MX, but Boeing and Airbus don't match... so probably they will definetly retire this aircrafts... as soon as they finish with the Fokkers I'm sure they will start with the 757s....

The only good thing out of this, is that we will see and have a mix of planes in Mexico! Airbus with Mexicana, and Douglas/Boeing with AeroMexico!

If they have 9 of them, and think of getting more, that's enough to justify the presence of the type, even if it is the oddball, in their increasingly all-Airbus fleet. There is no analagous Airbus type for the 757. The A321 matches in seats, but not in range or cargo capacity, and as people have noted, in its ability to take off from a hot and heavy airport like MEX. There is no reason for them to get rid of it just because it doesn't seem to match the rest of the fleet.
It is not enough to be rude; one must also be incorrect.

Travelli'man,

MX had plans to get more 757s this year... but I don't know if this plans continue....

As you also state, 'there is no reason to get rid of it just because it doesn't seem to match the rest of the fleet'., but maybe MX probably got plans to get an all Airbus fleet.... considering there are only 9 - 757s it's not that difficult to replace like if they do with their almost 40 A320 family aircraft...
