Longest 744 Route

Thu Jul 31, 2003 1:48 am

Someone just posted a question regarding the longest 747-200 and 747-300 routes. Anyone know what the longest non-stop commercial air route in the world is (it has to be a 744)?

I think the JFK-JNB is longest of the two, though it often tech stops at Cap Verde. Wouldn't ORD-HKG also be up there somewhere?

Previous contenders would be UAL's JFK-HKG flight.

The 772ER is currently the longest ranged aircraft in commercial service

The longest nonstop 744 segment is ATL-JNB, though the return cannot be flown nonstop

"Or, can a long-range 777 travel further than a 744?"

The 777LR will beat anything.

On the 744, I would have said UA JFK-HKG.

the longest scheduled flight in the world is atlanta to johannesburg on a south african airways 747-400 at 8440 miles. in the summer, they can only fly nonstop going east, and have to stop at SID (santa maria) going west

The 777LR does not fly yet. It is in the production stages. Soon, though. Look for it on routes to match the A345 capabilities.

Ssides - just like DIA pointed out the 772LR is still in productions in Seattle.

When it does come into service it will be the longest range aircraft taking over the A340-500. Right now the longest range aircraft is the 777-200ER than it wil be the A340-500 when that comes out than the 777-200LR.

The 777-200LR for sure can fly ATL-JNB, infact it will be able to fly non-stop from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore to New York non-stop or Mumbai, Delhi Los Angeles non-stop.

At the moment, ATL-JNB/CPT stops at Cape Verde both ways. It has not always been this way; in fact in the last year, it has been flown nonstop going east, but right now it isn't. About being able to do that nonstop in the summer, is that the northern hemisphere or southern hemisphere summer considering the flight is almost half and half in each hemisphere?

I think it was LAX-TLV by El-Al, which used to be operated by a 744. On the westbound leg the aircraft had to make a refuelling stop, usually in Toronto. The flight time was 14 hours. Today the route is operated by a 777, which stops in Toronto on both legs.

The ATL-JNB is the longest, it is stopping in SID right now because the loads are higher out of ATL, and I think there was one other reason that I've forgotten right now. The nonstop will be back this fall.

My first post so apologies if I'm stating the obvious at any point!

Airbus website suggests A340-500 series can fly 15,800 kms non-stop, not sure if any route fully utilizes this yet; Paris-Perth? This seems to beat the 747 or 777 in any ER version.

A search of Google seems to suggest that the United JFK-HKG was longest scheduled service, taking 15 hrs 40 minutes, covering 13,580 kms and using 216,000 litres of fuel. Anyone know when this service stopped as I can't seem (not tried too hard) to find it anymore?

In terms of flight time, yes LAX-SYD and JFK-HKG are longer than ATL-JNB. But in terms of miles flown, ATL-JNB is the longest. I don't know the exact off hand, but I remember that ATL-CPT was 8134 miles...I know that flight all too well...

Longest 744 route flown nonstop in both directions was JFK-HKG by UA. Only lasted at the most 6 months, discontinued 31Aug01. Starting this weekend, UA will resume nonstop flights ORD-HKG which will then be the longest nonstop route in both directions by a 744.

CO will also resume EWR-HKG this weekend with a nonstop flight with a 777-200ER which will make it the longest nonstop route in both directions with any commercial aircraft in scheduled service.

LY currently fly a 744 TLV-YYZ-LAX and back the same way. They used to go nonstop LAX-TLV on the return only a few years ago with 744s.

SV also has flown LAX-JED nonstop but only as VIP flights for the Royal family.

The777Man, your statement "Starting this weekend, UA will resume nonstop flights ORD-HKG which will then be the longest nonstop route in both directions by a 744" is not correct. ORD-HKG is 'only' 6773nm, MEL-LAX is flown in both directions year round at 6883nm by B747-400s and B747-400ERs.

Can somebody provide the exact figures?

According to the A.Net Database the A340-500 would be the one with the best range.

The A340-500 has 15,740km (8500nm)

The 777-300ER has 13,427km (7,250nm).

The 747-400ER - Range at MTOW 14,205km (7670nm)

For all the people claiming that Atl-JNB would be the longest 744 route, isn't it JFK-JNB. South African flies this non-stop with a 744 and as far as I know JFK is slightly farther away from South Africa than Atlanta is.

atl-jnb is the longest route. scheduled at 8440 miles. they do not fly in a straight line everyone, because of prevailing winds (think very complex dead-reckoning). in the summer, the flights are one stop each direction because it is hot and humid out of atl. in the fall and spring, it is nonstop going east, and certain months it is nonstop going west. they begin the nonstops again around mid to end of september.

with regard to the longest flight in terms of scheduled time, i do not doubt it is the ewr-hkg route by continental (back in october), as continental schedules extra time to account for delays. this, we all know is common. when i flew sfo to shanghai, we taxied for an hour and forty-five minutes before take-off and were still forty-five minutes early (and that's going west).

Any word on what kind of range the A380 will have? Will it fly further than the 777LR, or will its pax load hinder its ultra-long-range abilities?

It will be interesting to see if the A380-800 meets the 8,000 nautical mile range goal.

If it can, I wouldn't be surprised that QF uses the A388 on the route between SA - California">LAX and MEL during the Australian summer months.

I think a more intriguing possibility is the shorter-fuselage A380-700, which could have a range approaching 9,000 nautical miles. An airline such as South African Airways (SA) could be the launch customer for such a plane, which would allow non-stop flights between JNB and SA - Georgia">ATL/SA - New York">JFK year-round with no pax/cargo restrictions.

The777Man: Mel-Lax is NOT the longest 747-400 flight. that flight is 7931 miles according to qantas and expedia.

The south african (saa) 747-400 nonstop from atl to jnb is the longest at 8440 miles.

also, cathay used to offer a nonstop 747-400 from jfk to hkg, but has stopped that flight due to SARS and the economy

Actually, that was United's flight, and they killed it long before SARS arose. CX only did JFK-HKG nonstop once to celebrate the opening of Chek Lap Kok.

From the Great Circle Mapper

Will it fly further than the 777LR

No, the 772LR will have more than 1170nm greater range than the A388

The longest route to be flown officially is by CONTINENTAL's B 777-200ER between EWR and HKG which takes 18 hrs nonstop in the winter.

The longest route for a 744 would probably be SAAs nonstop JNB-JFK flights.

The longest A 330-200 flights are by KOREAN AIR ICN-ZRH and SAA JNB-CDG and JNB-FCO.

Am I right?

The777Man: during certain months, the saa 747-400 atl-jnb is nonstop because of prevailing winds and temperature. however, during months this cannot happen, they still do fly eastbound (atl-jnb) nonstop, but stop in SID going west. so atl-jnb is still the longest scheduled nonstop route, although sometimes not in both directions.

Behramjee: continental's 777 flight from ewr-hkg (still suspended by the way) is not the longest scheduled flight in miles. it is however, the longest scheduled domestic (us) flight and the longest out of the new york area. it may be the longest scheduled flight in hours, but that's misleading. we all know that airlines cushion their flight times to account for ground delays. i read in airways magazine that that flight takes longer to prep because it is very sensitive to weight calculations and weather. continental's flight is not the longest in the air.

AC is planning to commence non stops YYZ-DEL which is 11662kms from Winter. Definitely lower than some of the routes like ATL-JNB etc. its comparable with LAX-HKG. As per some quarters aircraft is going to be an A340-300 (though I am extremely sure that such a route with a A340-300 would entail severe payload limitations).
