Why Did Carnival Sell Out To Pan Am II

Thu Jul 31, 2003 8:45 am

Why did Carival Air Lines agree to be purchased by Pam Aint....errr..Pan Am Mk2? Why did management at Carnival put their future, their employees' future into an airline that had just barely begun flying, that had yet to prove they could stay afloat? And look what happened!!!  Smile

It was not up to Carnival mgmt, it was the Carnival owners how made the decision.

Regardless of the business decision by Pan Am, the price was obviously right.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Carnival never made money. Marty Shagrue came along with some cash in hand. He proclaimed that the route structures would be an ideal mix. When the check cleared, Carnivals owners agreed that Pan Am II would be an ideal owner then took the money and left.

Advance booking volume dropped into the toilet overnight. Although Carnival never made any money, they did have a fairly loyal client base that filled the cheap seats from NYC - Florida.

Carnival also did some charter work for a tour operator in the Detroit area and I remember seeing there planes at times at the DTW airport.

Why'd they sell? Mickey Arrison of Carnival Cruises found a sucker to buy his "airline".

Those KW planes were pigs...

There was one 727 that had such a severe roach infestation they had to call an outside exterminator in to gas the plane. It was buttoned up for two days to insure the creepy crawlies were done.

If I recall correctly it was 866E,and if I'm not mistaken Pan Am II reregistered it and it is in service with them as the Clipper Cristol,(Named after the bankruptcy court judge who gave them a second chance).

I know at least two of the A300's still had "Original" Pan Am interiors as well.
Yes, I actually *do* work for an airline, how about you?

When you say Pan Am II are you referring to the Pan Am that is currently flying and based out of Portsmouth, NH?

Pan Am 2 took to the air on Sept 26 1996 with Airbus A300's flying between JFK, MIA, LAX. They later expanded into other cities and bought Carnival Air Lines in 1997. I believe they went bankrupt and closed down in 1998.
