Anyone Taken A Flight Due To The Aircraft Type?

Thu Jul 31, 2003 12:00 pm

Has anyone bought a ticket on a flight, just because it was a type of plane you really wanted to fly on? I am tempted to, eventhough it seems kind of silly. I really want to fly on a UA 747 before they are removed from service completely. I also want to try an MD-11 and an L-1011, if I can find one anywhere. I have been on most aircraft types, but the MD-11 has always eluded me. And I have been on L-1011's, but not in several years.

I once was flying to SFO from DTW on NWA and took the routing via MSP as it was on a 747-400 and the sold the upper deck business seats as coach so I took the connection instead of the nonstop.

Plenty of times... I choose DL to NRT (when the fare was cheap ex-DTW, which rarely happens) because I wanted to fly on the MD-11... I'll fly Crapinental to MCO because I want to be on the B764 flight from IAH... when I fly to LAX in a couple weeks, I'll sit at DFW for three hours / three LAX flights so I can be on the B777... I could go on  Smile.

Back in 1996, I went to YVR for an interview with Air Canada. My father, who was an AC employee, booked me on one of his passes.
On the return flight from YVR-YYZ, he had me booked on a 762 flight, but I got him to change it to a later flight so I could fly for the first time on a 744.
I even got to sit in the upper deck.
Very nice experience.

When UA was getting rid of their DC-10s and had only about 5 or so remaining, one day I pulled up the routing for them. One was going ORD-SEA and had plenty of room in First Class, so I decided to go to SEA for the day. That day I decided I was going wherever the DC-10 was going, and that was that. I really didn't care less where I was going to end up. I don't really track routings anymore since UA's entire fleet is a pile of boring cookie cutter twinjets these days. Sad

Yep...last March, I flew PHL-PIT-PHL on a US Airways A330-300 and returned on an AirTran 717 with a 2 hour layover in PIT...the total cost of the trip was $84.00 (FL's being on the PHL-PIT route at the time meant fares were dirt cheap on both US and FL and I did it because it was a rare opportunity to fly on the A330, as it was a one-time repositioning flight to PIT...at that time the A330 was the only type of US mainline aircraft that I hadnt flown and I didnt really see any other opportunities coming in the near future...and of course getting to experience AirTran was an added bonus as well...

A few weeks ago I flew FLL-JFK-FLL in 1 day with a 4 hour layover at JFK, heading up on a Song 757 and back on a jetBlue A320...I did that trip, not really for the type of aircraft, but for the airlines involved...I really wanted to experience both Song and jetBlue...the TR is around in the TR forum if you'd like to read it...

The ever elusive MD11.. Never got on one before American sold them. Trying to get on a Delta one but it never comes together. I've always wanted to visit Zurich to spend a few days at the airport and to fly a Swiss MD11 before they're gone, but seems like every time I want to book something solid from the US, it's an A332  Angry

I ALWAYS chose based on aircraft type, and window seats available. I prefer the 777 or 744 because they are the largest and widest. I flew to HKG one year just to have my first ride on a 747.

Best thing about the internet is being able to look up the airlines' schedules and pick the plane you want to be on. I try to stick w/ United, and I always look for 777's, 767's and 747's first and foremost. It is just cool to be on widebodies, plus they are likely to be less full

Several times. For transcons and transats, I like the 762/763....you are almost guaranteed a good seat.

I also seek out the AC 333 due to their new seats which are comfortable beyond belief.

I booked an AC L10 flight over a more convenient one in 1995 to get on the soon-to-be-retired L10.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I always book based on aircraft type. Let's face it, would you rather fly from SFO-IAD in a 777/767 or on a 319/320? Wide bodies rule, and thankfully United flies the planes I love.

I took Delta from DTW-MCO with a stop in Atlanta instead of flying direct DTW-MCO on NW or Spirit so I could fly on a Delta MD-11 (ATL-MCO) and a 764 (MCO-ATL) but the MD-11 flight got subbed with a 764 too.

Did a run from JAX to BNA prior to 727s retirement just for the memories, and did the same thing, MCO-ATL for my first and last flights on an MD11 (most likely). Those were my only reasons.

Always try to base flights around particular aircraft, however have also based a whole trip to South Africa to fly on a DC6.
Saw a photo in a JP's of the Namibia Commercial Aviation DC6, great photo, but the really interesting part was the faces you could see in the windows. Some research lead to a 3 week trip to HKG/SIN/JNB/HRE/VFA/WDH with side trips to Krueger and Chobe national parks so we could fly from Victoria Falls to Windhoek on the DC6 which was doing scheduled flights on the route for Air Namibia. We also had a bonus on the trip, flying a Nationwide 727-100 from JNB to HRE due to a pilots strike at Air Zimbabwe.
Great trip.

Yes I do some times  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

When I'm travelling for holidays or spotting purpose I'll choose flights schedulded with equipment I haven't flown with yet or really want to fly... A319 instead of 737-300 for example  Smile

Yes...

Just a couple of weeks ago I flew AC from YWG to YYZ, but not on one of the many non-stops. Instead, I went YWG-YQT-YYZ, to get a Dash 8-100 on the first leg (simply because I like them), and a CRJ 200 on the second (because I hadn't flown on one yet).

Last year I did YWG-YVR, again on AC (Jazz), again avoiding the non-stops and going over YXE each way. This got me one segment on a Dash 8-100, and three on the F28 -- another type I'd never been on, which AC were soon to retire.

My colleagues at work are becoming ever more convinced of my eccentricity...

Cheers,

When Delta was running all those 777 charters to HNL, nonrevd back to ATL (going lax to slc to sea to atl to get back there!) to hop on the flight between ATL and LAX (was wide open, think semi charter/posistioning flight).. was nice to finally fly on that bird. I only wish Delta would exchange a 777 on my flight to NRT in two weeks instead of starting in January.

Grabbed a TWA flight on a 757 from STL-IND. Picked that flight because I had never been on a 757 before. When my stepfather picked me up he said "didnt southwest have one come in from St. Louis 45 mins ago, why didnt you fly that one so I could get you home quicker"......he obviously doesnt understand my obsession with planes.

I'm like that too, unlike the rest of my family. I always choose my flight according to what aircraft TYPE it is instead of the time of arrival and departure. I've always wanted to fly on 727's eventhough I had been on quite a few of them before, because I knew they would all be gone in the near future. What I mean is, whenever I had to book a flight first thing I looked at is: "Can I get a 727? Yes or No". It was that simple, regardless of the schedule, up until now. Of course I'm still interested to know what aircraft type I'll be on when I book a flight but I'm not as frustrated anymore, as I was in the past, because at least I know there are no more 727's. That's the main thing (knowing there are no more 727's), I feel better now. There is no aircraft type I don't like, I enjoy flying on all of them, the only thing that would make me upset is not doing anything to get a 727 when I had the possibility to do so.
Last year ,I flew within one evening, MIA-TPA-MIA, just to be on the last flight on the 727 with American Airlines. I was on holiday in Fort Lauderdale, I had absolutely nothing to do in Tampa, I drove to Miami Int'l Airport only for that final flight.

Yes...

My wife & I and another couple flew Non-Rev BDL-MIA-MBJ. A few days later, we added a leg, so we flew MBJ-MIA-JFK-BDL so that we could hop on the (then new) AA MD-11 MIA-JFK. It was quite a treat riding first class in a nearly horizontal position for that trip!

We had quite a variety of a/c on that trip, as well. 722 BDL-MIA, DC-10 MIA-MBJ, 722 MBJ-MIA, MD-11 MIA-JFK, Shorts 360 JFK-BDL.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I would say i do this everytime where possible and probably amounts to 7 outa 10 flights i do this.

i have had countless arguments with travel agents who insist on booking me direct, i would rather go via! the more flights to get to my destination the better!

my best argument was in australia when i checked the flights from Brisbane to Sydney, they were using 737 and 767 Qantas equipment mainly until i spotted QF020 a 747SP from manilla - Brisbane - Sydney, I was told i could not book an international flight for internal?, The manager became involved and needless to say for no extra money i flew a beautiful VH-EAB 747SP on what amounted to an hours leg to Sydney (perfect).

Of course. I was able to get on the SAA 74L on the JNB-ZRH and this was for sure not the only flight.

I also went on the DL1011, JAL Dc10 and I always look that when flying an airline that I will get not always the same types of aircrafts.

Sure, many times....

I booked on an Jet Airways flight late at night (which meant staying overnight at MAA for my BA the next morning) to fly the ATR 72-500

Did LHR-DUS-MUN-PRG-MUN-LHR with LH to fly on the Dash-8, Fokker 50 & ATR72

On a comfort point, I choose the A330 flights from Gatwick with EK because of the 2-4-2 config instead of the cramped 3-4-3 on the 777's from LHR.

Losts of times.
My personal best is on United back in 1974, SEA - DCA with stops in SFO - LAX - PIT - ORD. This way I got on DC-8-32, 727-22, DC-10-10, 747-122 and 737-222.

My lastest example was flying LHR-CAI-LHR with BA aboard its B744. I could have flown with MS aboard its 772, which would have saved me £2/3. But I chose BA merely because of its B744 - I had never flown this aircraft before, whereas I have flown the 772 several times (BA, DL and SU).

In December last year I flew DUB-PIK-STN to get the 737-200 (FR) and STN-DTM to get the 737-400 (AB).

In February this year I flew CPT-JNB to get the brand new A 340-600 (SA) and JNB-ZRH to get the 747SP (SA).

Last month I choose SA - New York">JFK-CDG on AF010 because it was operated with a 777-200, I wanted to get a different aircraft type because I already had a 747-400 on the flight to SA - New York">JFK.

My buddy and I took AA 777 from DFW-ORD specifically to fly the 777 (this was right when AA got the 777). We looked around ORD and came right back to DFW on an S80. He non-reved for free, I payed 120$, not bad.

In answer to the original question - "Nearly.".

In early 2001 I was in the middle of my usual fortnightly trip with Ansett and was sitting in Brisbane airport early in the morning and looked into the possibility of flying Brisbane - Cairns on one of Qantas' 747SPs before they retired (and subsequently chopped up). It was possible but was gong to cost extra dollars and an extra night away. However I was very tired after being on two previous flights overnight from Western Australia and decided not to do it and to continue my trip with Ansett.

Looking back I should have done it as they are scrap metal (or melted into something else) now. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Hopefully here in the next week or so, I'll be taking a 'non-rev day-trip' to Columbia, SC just to fly on US Airways Express. It's been so long since I've done a prop flight, that I'm hoping for a Dash 8 there, and I've never been on a regional jet, so I'll hope to catch the ERJ back.

Sure I have. Last year I needed to fly from ORD to SJU. I snubbed the usual direct American Airlines flight on a 757 in favor of widebody Delta 767-300 even though i had to connect through Atlanta.

In the summer of 1997, I flew with a group to France. The round trip ticket included in the price of the program was JFK-CDG-JFK on Air France. BUT being the spoiled kid that I am, I convinced my Mom to buy me a one way on a UAL 777 on the CDG-IAD route, one of the first routes to get the 777. It was soooooo worth it.

I have also taken EWR-FLL-EWR on a CO 757-300, on purpose for the new aircraft.

I always like to choose a 744 or 772 or 773 or 345 or 346 or M11. So I'm always checking with the travel agents on the equipment used prior to deciding to purchase an airline ticket. My favorites are always on the wide-bodies but I'll accept a 333 or 764 or 738/739 for shorter trips. Boy, I'm really picky about what aircraft to take!

absolutely! you know you are an aviation ethusiast when you book your flights depending on the plane (sometimes as a great inconvenience). don't you hate it when you ask your friends what kind of plane they were on and they have no idea?

don't worry about ual 747-400s, they'll be around for a while. if you want to catch planes before they go, keep an eye on AA's F-100s, Delta's MD-11s, and Alaska's 737-200 Combis. If you absolutely have to fly on an L1011, there's always ATA charter, BWIA (going fast), and (god forbid) the flying hospitals. also, pan am still has 727s hanging around. and, for the coup de grace, check out chalks ocean airways (the world's oldest airline). they still fly grumman amphibious planes to the bahamas from south florida.

Of course!!!

My main criteria is price, but when tickets cost the same I go for plane type. Last summer flying from Milan to Barcelona I could choose between a 1h20 min nonstop with IB (320s or 757s) or AZ (320s or M80s), instead I took AF via Lyon and took the "rival" ERJ145 (MXP-LYS and back) and CRJ700 (LYS-BCN and back). Quite cool.

Guilty! I book my trips like that all the time. In summer 2001, I flew From Billings to Syracuse, NY and back. On the way there, I flew BIL-SLC-CVG-SYR, but on the way back, I decided to go SYR-ATL-SLC-BIL, just to catch that 767-400 on the ATL-SLC run.
