Golden Age Jets & Music Lovers No Match?

Fri Aug 01, 2003 2:53 am

It seems to me that these people who complain about noisy planes are the people that enjoy music. Every time I read the post that barfs at older jets due to noisy, I then looked at username's profiles. Statisically, high numbers are music freaks. As myself, I LOVE the sound of old jets and I'm NOT big into music stuff.

My question, is there anybody who is music freaks that also LOVE the sound of roaring 732's JT8D engines, rocket blasting of 727's, so on... I havent seen any yet...?

I believe the reason most of us music lovers have a problem with the noisier older jets is that we are concerned about potential damage to our hearing. I'd much rather hear music than older jets myself, as much as I love them.

As a youth in the 60s I remember the how loud those early turbojet JTD4s were on DC-8-21s or 707-100/300s, next to them 727s and 737-200s were whisperjets!

I think you're right, we music lovers ain't fans of loud jets.  Wink/being sarcastic

Okay, I understand that those people like you are conservative about potenital hearing damage. Wondering if that also that applied to hard rock music lover who usually being blasted by loud boombox or at some loud concert? I am pretty sure that CV880/990 as well as 707 are not able to beat the sound wave of hard rock music at the concert?

Well, I guess I'm the exception in this group. I love the sound of Jt8's etc taking off and I love music and play music as a second career when I'm not flying 717's around. Have you ever been to a movie where an aircraft scene involved a sad goodbye? People are sobbing etc. due to the characters in the movie and the story line however through some sad music accompanied by the whine of an engine and a departing jet and I want to cry tears of joy as I think that is just about the most moving thing I can imagine. The combination of a well written piece of music set to sunset departure of a 727 with the trail of smoke left against a deep red sky is enough for me shed a tear or two. My wife always thought I was into the movie but later in our marriage she started to understand the real motivation. I guess I'm sick.

I attended rock concerts when I was younger but I always tried to wear earplugs during the shows to save my ears. Some bands like The Who were pretty damn loud. Even though I still listen to rock, I just don't crank it up as much as I used to, part of becoming an old fart, I guess.

However, they were not as loud as jet engines. When I was in the Air Force I worked on A-7D fighters, let me tell 'ya, those suckers were loud. Not only as loud or louder than The Who, but also the pitch of the noise made them very obnoxious. This was specially so when 5 or 6 A-7Ds got cranked up for a mission. Glad I had my earphone type protectors on!

Of course, an 880/990/DC-8/707 flying overhead wouldn't have been as loud, but they could be pretty loud. I suppose part of my current aversion to loud noise is as much due to my age in the late 40s as well as being a music lover. Call me an ole' fart!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

"Some bands like The Who were pretty damn loud." Yes I guess so. I believe they are still in the Guiness book of workd records as the loudest band.

What I love (hate? Wonder about?) are the 18 year olds at work that complain about the airplane noise here in Tucson. They live in a house built 70 years after the airport, get in cars that have $4000.00, 170 db "sound systems" and have the temerity to complain about being able to hear an F-16 for 30 seconds. Ay Yi Yi.

Not a one has yet had a clue what I mean when I tell them "that is the sound of your freedom."

LOL! I agree, it's something to wonder about. I don't see airplane noise as a problem these days, but there's people out there who consider the fact they can hear anything at all coming from an airplane to be an intrusion. Sheeesh!

Well I love two forms of heavy metal...

A. Anything in the form of In Flames, Moonspell, Lacuna Coil, Iron Maiden, Disturbed etc. Stuff that makes Metallica sound like wimps.

B. Anything in the form of DC-8s, 707, F-15s, Concordes, 727s before Stage III, DC-9s before Stage III. Stuff that makes CFM engines sound like wimps.

I like my heavy metal and i like em both LOUD.
