Want Some Details Of The Crash Of N798PA 13JUN68

Fri Aug 01, 2003 4:01 am

It was a stormy night as the B707-321, "Clipper Caribbean" regn N798PA approached Calcutta (CCU) on 13JUN68. The ATC informed QNH 992 millibars which a tired crew misinterpreted as 29.92 inches of mercury (equivalent to 1013.2 mb or standard atmospheric pressure). They set the altimeter accordingly at 1013.2. Thanks to the misjudgement, the airplane was approximately 300 feet lower than they thought it was.

With visibility extremely poor and heavy rain, the aircraft ploughed into a banana plantation approximately 1.2 kms short of the runway with a part of the broken fuselage in a pond. Five on board were killed.

I did manage to gather up some information on this accident. But what I did not ever come to know were the name of the Captain, the flight number of that particular flight or name and contact of any individual who had been in that accident. If any of you could enlighten me on this, I'd be grateful.

Its been a long long time (in fact even before I was born)... but this plane has played a very very very important role in my life.

Tony CT-NYC is asking the question I'm also curious about - how can it have been that significant? Did you know someone on the flight?

Don't jump down his throat yet. Maybe it was a parent or grandparent and in some way it's important to him.

NOPE. No slack-cutting. His wording is "this plane played a very, very, very important role in my life" ....

HOW ??

Vimanav-I wish that I could be of more help. Don't know if you know of this site but, there is a section you can go to to ask questions of former PanAmer's, maybe someone reading you message will be of help.

PanAmAir.org (when you are there, go to "Storyboard")
