Continental TPA-ATL?

Fri Aug 01, 2003 12:07 pm

Hey all, I just found out CO operates a flight once a week from TPA to ATL. I know they have these scheduled charter things, like the ones between MIA and Cuba, is this another sched charter route? Also what other "point to point" flights like this does CO operate? Thanks!

Hey Flyboy80! You haven't emailed me back yet:D. I think CB777 is right, CO is doing a codeshare with DL.

Back in the mid-90s, Continental operated ATL-CHS as the continuation of the late-night IAH-ATL flight, using 735 equipment. To my knowledge, that has been the only scheduled CO flight that has not touched a hub in the last several years.

The segment was discontinued several years ago.

No its amazingly odd, They also fly OAK-DFW! once again, this flight only runs on Tuesday, its not a Codeshare with Delta! I believe these are sched charters, they aren't aculty booked in the continental system, however they are within the CO timetable.
Flight 3043 operates from TPA-ATL
Flight 3001 operates OAK-DFW (once again both of these flights are Tuesday only flights) This is very interesting. I'm interested if there are anymore. The delta code share flights are all in the "4 thousands" people! DUH!

Gnomon,

I remember those CHS flights being done on a 727. In 98' I jumpseated several times on the 727 from IAH to ATL and the crew continued on to CHS. Sure do miss that plane.

Which Continental timetable are you looking through? The online .pdf file does not show these flights nor do online timetables at various website.

I always wondered why they operated San Antonio to LAX up until a few years ago.

These special flights are showing in CO's downloadable Electronic timetable.

I do believe that flights in the 3000 range are charter flights.

Flyboy80:

If you had looked a little deeper you would've seen that CO 3043 only operated on Thursday, July 31st. That probably confirms it was a one-time charter.

There's another CO flight from TPA to ATL on Sep 20th. It's CO 3035.

I'm an FA for CO, and yes these TPA-ATL flights exist and are operated with CO aircraft and crew. More than likely they are charters for sports teams, we have several on our roster, the Devil Rays and Bucaneers being a couple. We even brought the Yankees home from their world series win in 2000.

I thought DL was the only one that operated that route. I really dont understand why CO would operate that route. But hey i wouldnt have thought they would do MIA to Cuba either.

CO also flies PHL-Providenciales (Turks and Caicos Islands) once a week on Saturdays with a 737-800...not sure why though...

I flew co's IAH-ATL-CHS flight a few times between 1994 & 1996. Always wondered what the deal was and if they had more non-hub flights such as that one. I remember the flight back on the CHS-ATL-IAH route has about 7 or 8 people on the CHS-ATL leg once - it did fill up pretty well on the second leg.
I've flown on 9V-SPK.

The Yankees played the Mets for the 2000 World Series. That must have been a short flight...

"is this another sched charter route?"

CO has weekly scheduled charters from EWR to...

Providenciales Turks and Caicos, St.Lucia, and one or two Dominican Republic resort towns like La Romana or Punta Cana.

Oopps, my mistake Flyguy1. I love to watch baseball, but don't keep up with stats. It might have been '02. I'm guessing a flight during the subway series would have been verrrrrrry short.

I know, within the last 6 or 7 years, we ran a SNA-LAX-CLE flight, and also a CLE-SEA-PDX, and a CLE-PDX-SEA once. Also, CO has run PDX-ANC, and still runs SEA-ANC, both non-hub flights. Can't think of any others off the top of my head, though.

CO also has service between Los Angeles and Honolulu. I think most of the major carriers serve that route.

In '97 I flew LAX-SFO, CO flew about 4 flights daily between LAX and SFO back then.

Also CO has had on again off again flights to San Salvador from LAX.

The TPA flights usually are to fly the Devil Rays. We also fly the Astros, Yankees, Orioles and other baseball teams from time to time. During college football season, you'll see some very strange routings as well to cities that don't even have airline service...These show up in the system I'm sure as we have to plan equipment for these flights and our routers need to know in advance when they need to cover.

Back in the late 80's, maybe as late as '90, perhaps, CO flew the 747-200 on that route! We'd fly it like SFO-LAX, then the aircraft would change flight numbers and go to EWR. I think the 747 was 4x daily.

Also other routes I do remember (not counting CALLite, which we try to forget): CO did experiment with non-hub service to LAS for a time: SAT-LAS; FLL-LAS; ATL-LAS; even CVG-LAS. I remember the CVG-LAS in the early/mid 90's, because it was like a 1030pm flight out of CVG, and made great oversell protection for our CLE-LAS flight that left like 8pm back then.  Smile

Not only did CO fly ATL-CHS, but I vaguely remember that CO used to fly ATL-HHH or MYR (I forget which one). Can someone tell me if I've just been smoking too much crack tonight, or if my memory serves me correctly...

The CO charter flights from PHL operate every Sat. EWR-PHL-Providenciales-PHL-EWR with a 738. I am almost certain it has some affliation with a tourist company in the Philadelphia area that is sponsoring the flight.

Not right how? People want to fly somewhere, touring companies set it up, we provide the aircraft and the crews. We are in the business of getting people where they want to go.

I flew the IAH-ATL-CHS route back in March of '99. I was heading to the beach for the weekend and spending my weekdays in ASA training for COEX. I remember being disappointed that the equipment had been recently changed from a 727 to an MD-80. I ended up getting first class next to a 727 pilot commuting home to Macon, Ga from upgrade training on the 757. What struck me were the 20 or so connecting passengers from CLE and EWR boarding the plane in ATL.

The ATL-Hilton Head, SC flights were operated by Colgan Air back in '99. At the time Colgan was a code-share partner with CAL. The aircraft were B1900C models and the flight was a huge departure from the rest of the Colgan route structure.

Cheers,
Markus
