Frontier Airlines To Order 19 A319 (+23 Options)

Fri Aug 01, 2003 9:22 pm

Frontier Airlines has announced that it signed an LOI for 19 A319 aircraft and 23 options which can be taken on other members of the A320 family. Deliveries would run from 2004 to 2008. In addition, Frontier will lease 14 A319.

its good that they are moving to a single type fleet. right now they just want to suck the life out of the 733s for as long as possible, and when theyre done the 319s will come just in time.

Actually looks like it is 15 A319, not 19 as initially mentioned by some news articles.

Good for Frontier. It is good to see that they are healthy enough to grow at such a rate.

i remember when they wanted to fly on 737's. i guess that the A319's serve them better (please no airbus vs. boeing!)

Gotta love Frontier - more excitement for us, Denver photographers!

With these new planes in the works can an announcement about a second hub and or at least a focus city be far behind! As DIA is dragging there feet about the gates Frontier needs?

Good news ! The A 319 and A318 look great in Frontier's paint scheme. By the way, Which is Frontier's 2 letter code ? Same as for the old Frontier ?

I really hope they come back to Boston! United sucks in comparison (no PTVs, etc) and they're our only option to Colorado now.

Two things:

(i) In F9's SEC filing today, it mentions the possibility of leasing 3 x A320's and also the possibility of substituting A318's for A319's.

(ii) I guess we'll be seeing a few more cities that get F9 service.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

cheers

i think it's great. i live in boston, and used to love the nonstop bos-den flights. too bad they stopped that route. maybe now they will reinstate it.

den may be dragging its feet, but for how long? given united's current situation, frontier is in an incredible position to go after ual's traffic through den. also, perhaps a bit of leverage to use against the airport too.

all i know is, given the chance to fly f9 versus ual on a similar route, i will always fly frontier. and they have the best looking planes, even if they are airbuses.

How About DEN-PIT? With the rumors of talks 'with St. Louis and Pittsburgh,' service to DEN would be great. It'd be better than US Airways.

Those posted is already on the topic into the message boards is resume nonstop from DEN-STL already.  SmileI don't think would chance to begin nonstop from DEN-PIT anytime soon and if they are competition of those nonstop from PIT-DEN flight. Thanks!  Smile

Any good news in the airline industry should be applauded, exciting news for Frontier and Airbus.

I dont want to be negative, but is Frontier's pace of expansion going just a bit too fast? It always scares me when rather new airlines place large orders for brand-new aircraft. Any word on whether the new A32X aircraft will replace the remaining 733 fleet (I guess the 732s are gone by now) or does Frontier have expansion plans in mind?

Dutchjet:

As far as I can work it out, when the negotiations and and contract are finalized, certain things will happen.

Apart from whatever leasing arrangements Frontier is making for A319's, the Airbus contract will require Frontier to lease the three A320's and the fourteen A319's or A318's.

There will also be a provision for the aircraft to be varied - even though it may say A319's, Frontier will be able to change to A320's and A318's.

As to fast expansion - this has been said of Frontier a couple of times. When they placed the original Airbus order, everyone was very surprised. After 9/11, you could say that they bit off too much, but the new aircraft are still coming in on schedule and Frontier is back in profit again.

Since 1998 it has been a "growth" airline, and clearly the management plans a lot more expansion.

I expect the A319 to be the mainstay of the fleet, with some A320's and A318's for certain specific needs.

cheers

As i commented before after the Airtran order, this bodes poorly for the majors. I see LCC's and smaller carriers buying more and more planes and stealing a larger share of the domestic market. It's interesting after so much consolidation in the market to start to see a kind of fragmentation again, to see traffic spread out among more carriers; it's the opposite of what a lot of people were predicting 2-3 years ago when things were hot, and as AA and UA were preparing to gobble up TWA and US. That's probably better for us as consumers. I just worry a little more when I see this Frontier order about my United FF miles!
It is not enough to be rude; one must also be incorrect.

I believe 733s still have plenty of life left in them. Built in the 1980s, they should have at least 20 years left with proper maintenance.

DC9s were built in 1965-1982, and they are still flying around.

Mariner,

". . . and Frontier is back in profit again."

Could you clarify if this is operating profit, or net profit? I had understood that Frontier was only net profit due to the government bailout loans.

Any help would be appreciated.

I apologize for answering my own question, but I found the answer:

http://biz.yahoo.com/djus/030801/0657000363_1.html

Frontier made a profit of $10.9 million in the first quarter, while in the same quarter they received $15 million in government payments. Therefore, they were net profit, but not operating profit.

Frontier is back i nprofit again? Wow I hadn't heard that! HOW did I miss that? Is there a press release? I will have to check out their website.

I for one am a little cautious about this. I think that they may be growing too fast. I tend to lean that way anyhow- I think JetBlue's recent order is an act of sheer insanity to stir up the shareholders. I hope they make it; while I haven't flown B6, I am excited about their product. Same for Frontier. But gosh guys, Simma down Now!!!

Good luck, F9.

Sorry about the typo in the last post. I just wanted to follow up with NO, they are NOT in profit. Well, yeah they are:

DENVER (July 31, 2003) - Frontier Airlines (NASDAQ: FRNT) today reported fiscal first quarter 2004 net income of $10.9 million, or $0.36 per diluted common share, compared with a net loss of $2.5 million, or $0.09 per common share, before the cumulative effect of change in method of accounting for maintenance checks, for the airline's fiscal first quarter last year. The Company's fiscal first quarter 2004 net income included $15.0 million received under the Emergency Wartime Supplemental Appropriations Act and an unrealized gain on fuel hedges of $752,000, offset by aircraft lease exit costs of $686,000. These items, net of income taxes and related profit sharing, total $0.29 per diluted common share

SO- they made money, but only if you count the fat check that I wrote them (and you too, American taxpayers). Don't get me wrong- I think the gov't should help out the airlines... to a point. The majors that are losing cash hand- over- fist? No.

But, without uncle Sam's help, they lost 4.9 million. That's not profit, folks.

Argue with me all you want- I am interested in getting other people's perspectives on this.

You're right - F9 is not in operating profit, but they're closer than a lot of folks in this industry are... and they managed to reduce CASM again this quarter. Not a bad performance.

As for the planes, this is definitely good news. If you look at the Denver Post today (http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~26385~1548897,00.html), it looks like DEN is going to play hardball with UA, which will affect F9's Concourse A expansion -- it looks like the options could instead be to build space on B for US to move, then moving AS and CO to C, and getting UA's A gates back for F9. Complex, I know, but it could mean that F9 owns A without having to wait for such a big expansion...

I hope this works for Frontier spoken from a share holder. If the UA gates are not being used to the full extent then make them move. I believe UA must at first thought that Frontier was not going to be around this long, and also that they would not be in Chapter 11 like they are now. Now that Frontier is talking with PIT airport maybe this is lighting a fire under the powers that be at DIA!

I sincerely hope that things work out quickly in DIA for F9. I would desperately love to see them build up a focus operation here in PIT but I want it to be a long term, successful one. We have had plenty of LCC's come in with big plans but insufficient cash or staying power. Even with incentives it would cost F9 a ton of money to set up here. Continued growth at DIA is essential to F9's long term viability.

Sorry, guys, but F9 made actual - operating - profit last quarter.

http://www.frontierairlines.com/news/articleDisplay.asp?article=/general/2003/pr_07312003a.news

They made 36 cents a share including the government money. Excluding the government money (29 cents) they made an actual profit of 7 cents per share.

The $15 million they receivced from the government is not a net figure. Tax has to be paid on that money, so the actual net to F9 is around $8 million.

cheers

The past few times I've been in DEN, I've seen a lot of UA Express RJ's at mainline gates in Concourse B. Even on UA's website, it denotes the 8 gates in Concourse A as UA Express gates. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems pointless to use mainline gates for RJ's. If DIA just builds United's RJ expansion off of Concourse B, then a lot of mainline gates used by regional jets would be vacant. This would allow Frontier to move into UA's Concourse A gates. Just my two cents.

That would allow Frontier to move into UA's Concourse A gates. Do you think UA wants to help out F9?

True, but they are in bankruptcy protection, and I don't think UA would want the added costs of maintaining 8 extra gates.
