What Does 'SUD' Stand For On KLM 747-200's?

Sat Aug 02, 2003 5:59 am

Hi,

On these photos of KLM 747-200's, the aircraft is marked as "747-206B(SUD)." What does 'SUD' designate and why do only KLM's 747-200's have this designation? Thanks in advance.

These were B747-200s which were converted to -300 standards by Boeing by stretching the upper deck.

SUD - Stretched Upper Deck.

Yes, they were converted in the mid 80's to give them the enlarged upper deck of the -300/-400's and SUD stands for "Stretched Upper Deck".

When KLM ordered 3 factory new 747-300s (after the program was launched by Swissair in the early 1980s), KLM updated many (I think 8) of their newer 747-200s......the extra seating capacity of the streched upper deck (SUD) was especially interesting for KLM which operates many 747-300s in a Combi Configuation.

KLM's original 747-200s did not get the SUD treatment and left the KLM fleet upon the arrival of the 747-400.

No! Big grin

Only airlines that converted 747-200s to SUD standard were KLM and UTA. The UTA aircraft went to Air France, some of KLM's are still with KLM, the rest are parked at Mojave. JAL operate two 747-100SR/SUD models - if I remember correctly one was a conversion and the other was a built as a 747-100SR/SUD.

I remember seeing the 'SCD' designation. What does that stand for?

Enjoy the KLM B747-200 SUD because the will be gone soon. They are getting replaced by B777-200's beginning the end of this year.

SCD means Side Cargo Door, most likely to see them on combi's and freighters.

When QF first got their 300's they referred to them as SUD's, until someone pointed out that SUD in medical terms is Sudden Unexpectd Death, hence forth they were known as EUD's, Enlarged Upper Deck !!

Skymonster;

the exact designation according to Boeing is 747SR-146B(SUD)

No conversions, both delivered factory new, with, I believe, the LOOOONGEST Boeing designation ever.
