SIA 744 At Auckland W/O!?

Sun Aug 03, 2003 9:43 pm

According to a thread now running on Pprune, the SIA 744 involved in the Auckland tailstrike incident last March is a write-off. It was apparently not possible to guarantee that the repairs would be completely successful and consequently, the aircraft had to be written off.

The aircraft was 'SMT, line number 990.

It's been repaired, it's back in Singapore and I believe it's in service.

It doesn't seem to be so damaged.

Maybe SIA wrote it off just to have lots of spare parts!!!

Is there a chance this is true? The last photo in the database of this or jetphotos was of it in Auckland... 4 months ago (With the damage).

You never know, they are the best at everything. They could want the record of having the most -400's written off  Nuts

SMT is IN passenger service now - unless of course SIA decided to pull it out after they encountered problems on these services.

Written off?

SMT's already flown BACK to Auckland after its incident there... SMT op'ed SQ285 SIN-AKL 16 May 03 and back to SIN 17 May 03.

I dont think its very nice to write off an aircraft after repairs were carried out and returned back to service.....

IF, and I say agian IF this aircraft has been W/O after going back into service the person that let it fly needs to be SHOT!!

However this could all be a load of crap and the aircraft is fine.

Haha...trust SIA to not screw up on this one. I doubt they want someone to, 15 years down the road, trace back a repair record dating back to 2003 done by AirNZ on behalf of SIA, involving a screwed up bulkhead repair a la JAL123.

Another reason it's not photographed after the tail strike is because it's parked for some time due to SARS but it's flying now...

According to source at Air NZ the a/c in question was damaged far more severely than many suspected. The aircraft has reportedly had a new tail section attached, the work done by Boeing not Air NZ. The upper section of skin suffered a great deal of crinkling following the tail strike. Written off after the work was done, news to me, but possible I guess.
