Really bad weather in many parts of the country. ORD
had some heavy thundestorms in the early to mid afternoon today and put a ground stop program into effect. I rushed out to the airport when I saw the UAL B777 from Beijing was going to be diverted to MSP
. What a sight to see a B777 at MSP
Here's the diversions to MSP
today (at least what I could find):
AA1640, MD80 from SEA
AA1954, MD80 from PDX
AA86, MD80 from SEA
AA1526, B757 from LAX
UA850, B777 from PEK
Looking at the flight trackers it looks like every flight from about 1:00pm on was delayed from MSP
allowed the diversions to start leaving MSP
(bound for O'Hare) at about 4:30pm. The UAL 777 left at 5:00pm after about an hour and a half on the ground over by the Humphrey Terminal.
Although I was enjoying watching all the activity and listening to the ATC communications, I was aware that there were many people on board planes away from the gate for many hours. The worst was AA793 which left the gate at about 12:40pm and sat on the ground, waiting to take-off. At about 6:00pm they made a radio call to the tower that they had to return to the gate because of a "couple with an infant onboard". After maybe 20 minutes they returned to the lineup to take-off. When I got home, however, I found out the their waiting was in vain and the flight was cancelled (probably about 6 hours on a F100 just to get a cancelled flight).
I didn't get to see the Delta B763 at the Humphrey Terminal but it was a charter flight, unrelated to the weather.
