Good Day @ MSP!

Mon Aug 04, 2003 6:41 am

Today while at MSP I saw quite a few unusual things. First, an AA 757 landed. Then, I saw the first 757-200 in NW's new colors, it was an older aircraft because it had the four doors and no emergency exits. Then I saw a black-nosed AA MD-80, which MSP doesn't get. Then a UA 777 landed. Were the AA and UA planes diversions from ORD? And does anyone know the registration of the first NW 752 in the new colors?

Thanx,

Jeremy

Some are most likely diversions from ORD. The weather here in SE WI/NE IL today is very very very very shitty! T-storms are developing and not moving! Flash floods, hail, a real mess today at my church picnic..

I also saw a Delta 767 parked at the Humphrey terminal when driving by the airport today. Since it was parked at HHH I thought maybe it was doing a sports charter or something like that. Driving back by there later I saw the UA 777 parked by the HHH, so I figured maybe that was a diversion. Any of you FlightTracker buffs know what's up at MSP today?

Really bad weather in many parts of the country. ORD had some heavy thundestorms in the early to mid afternoon today and put a ground stop program into effect. I rushed out to the airport when I saw the UAL B777 from Beijing was going to be diverted to MSP. What a sight to see a B777 at MSP!

Here's the diversions to MSP today (at least what I could find):
AA1640, MD80 from SEA
AA1954, MD80 from PDX
AA86, MD80 from SEA
AA1526, B757 from LAX
UA850, B777 from PEK

Looking at the flight trackers it looks like every flight from about 1:00pm on was delayed from MSP. ORD allowed the diversions to start leaving MSP (bound for O'Hare) at about 4:30pm. The UAL 777 left at 5:00pm after about an hour and a half on the ground over by the Humphrey Terminal.

Although I was enjoying watching all the activity and listening to the ATC communications, I was aware that there were many people on board planes away from the gate for many hours. The worst was AA793 which left the gate at about 12:40pm and sat on the ground, waiting to take-off. At about 6:00pm they made a radio call to the tower that they had to return to the gate because of a "couple with an infant onboard". After maybe 20 minutes they returned to the lineup to take-off. When I got home, however, I found out the their waiting was in vain and the flight was cancelled (probably about 6 hours on a F100 just to get a cancelled flight).

I didn't get to see the Delta B763 at the Humphrey Terminal but it was a charter flight, unrelated to the weather.

Hi - what is Flight Trackers?

Is this a web site you can access to track a flight? My wife is in Europe at the moment and the ability to track her flights coming home would be great!

There are many flight trackers out there. Some are free and some are fee based. They normally only track flights over the US and Canada, however.

Here's some free ones to try:

I was also at MSP today. My UAL flight to ORD was delayed 3 hours. And I watched another UAL 737 and a pair of AA Fokkers sit on the deicing pad for 3 hours waiting for clearance. The best part the evening approach into ORD, there was a large T-Storm over Lake Michigan and it was quite a sight from the air. Almost made it worth the hour wait on the deice pad and the few hours in the terminal.

Good day in GRR for spotting UA aircraft as well. We had a 767-300ER from CDG and a 757-200 and A320 from unknown origins come our way. The 767-300ER was in GRR for quite along time. I felt bad for those passengers as they could not get off because of customs

On the flip side of that, I decided NOT to work today and saw some cool stuff. My aunt came to town so I was standing around waiting for her weather delayed MDW-MSP flight. I saw that UA 777 take off and it was just too cool. I had never in my life seen a 777 in MSP personally, a very rare bird at MSP indeed. Saw all sorts of AA and UA equipment probably intended for ORD instead of MSP...
