F9 To Add Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo

Tue Aug 05, 2003 12:26 am

Frontier has applied for permission to fly to Ixtapa, as the 5th Mexican destination.

The press release says that F9 wants to be the airline of choice for Mexcio from Denver, for both tourism and business.

So, hopefully, they'll add a couple of business destinations. I wonder which one will be first: Monterrey or Mexico City? Guadalajara?

cheers

Good call, its an untapped resource. UA doesn't fly there, either does AA, CO does, but with a connection in IAH.

I think Monterrey (MTY) and Mexico City (MEX) have more chance than Guadalajara. (GDL)

Visit Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo !!! (ZIH)

The least served destination in Mexico (from the US) is Veracruz. I think only CO flies there with an RJ.

It looks like a big business market, but would there be any tourist interest from the US?

Veracruz would not be a tourist destination but more of an ethnic/friends & family route.

What routes are flown by Mexicana out of Denver?

Yes CO fly IAH-VER in a EMB 145.

Yes, Veracruz has a lot to offer as a turistic spot, the beach is not as beautiful as Cancun or Cabo, but thre is much to do besides go to the beach in VER.

Veracruz is Mexico´s oldest city, it has a fort from the XVI century, a lot music in the streets, and not far away you can find archeological sites like the "Tajín ruins".

The mexican tourist board should promote more Veracruz abroad.

Cheers !

LatinPlane:

The map on the Mexicana website is a bit out of date, I think. It doesn't show Denver at all, but they do fly there.

GALLO MEXICO:

(a) Veracruz is top of my list for places to visit.

(b) Frontier is teaming up with the Mexican Tourist Authority for a big push on the Mexican routes. I'd guess they'd tell F9 what routes they they can sell the best.

It seems clear that Frontier regards Mexico as fertile ground. What isn't clear is whether they see it as a "one way street". Obviously they're taking US tourists to Mexico. It would be interesting to know how much traffic they think they can pick up from Mexico.

It could work, a lot of mexicans likes to go to the Rockies in winter/spring to ski, others can take Denver as a hub on their way to northwest US.

To have a light idea of Veracruz, I will describe it as the "Mexican Havana".

Cheers.

I think the only airline to fly to MTY non stop from LAX is Aviacsa. F9 would be very smart to add on service to more tourist destinations in Mexico. Right now to go to Mexico from DEN I think that you must stop in Dfw on American Airlines. Or on Continental and stop in Houston.

Who watched Shawshank Redemption with Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman? The beach where they both end up is Zihuatanejo.

I was there once, it’s a great place.

The "Mexican Havana" makes it sound even more interesting.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

United has a flight from Denver to Mexico City, but it might be a code share with Mexicana.

I'm still trying to find out what flights Mexicana has from Denver.

Mariner,

Mexicana has a daily service between Mexico City and Denver. It runs an A319 six days of the week. MEX-DEN is an A320 on Saturday and DEN-MEX is an A320 on Sunday.

UA does not fly to MEX from DEN. That flight is codeshare with the above MX flight.

Thanks, N67OUW.

Have you any idea what the loads are like? I'm guessing weekend traffic is good with the bigger plane.

cheers

ZIH seems like a untapped marked. We flight ZIH-LAX x3 weekly and Sat. service ZIH-SFO. This is and off season schedule though. Does anyone else to service there year round? I no CO,NW show up there in the winter!

I wish F9 the best in ZIH! As some members say here, ZIH it's a seasonal airport... there are a lot of airlines that go into ZIH specially in fall/winter but specially a little bit more in winter....

That airport it's very similar to ACA with fall/winter flights... and also some airlines increase their capacity.. like NW from A320 to 757s and AA from MD80s to 757 and AWA from 737s to A320s or 757s....
