US Airways - Weekend Only Services

Tue Aug 05, 2003 3:17 am

US Airways is in the process of launching a weekend only services between major cities and resort/holiday destinations. Last year, we saw Sat/Sun service from CLT to various caribbean and south american destinations, it is continuing with flights out of LGA and BOS to destinations like SJU and LAS.....today IAD to SJU service, Saturday only, was announced.

I find this approach a bit unusual, can US Airways make money with once a week services on these routes? Are these routes operated in connection with tour operators or cruise ship lines? Is this all about giving their Frequent Flyers more choice in using their miles?

Your thoughts?

The SJU service on weekends a whole lot of those seats could be going to cruise lines. So that is a win win for the airline as it is a guarantee of butts in seats and the cruise line gets much needed air seats.

Once a week does well when you have vacationers going on a week long trip down to the caribbean. A lot of pax on our winter flights down there are there for a week. Loads were always pretty full. Plus, USAir and others have made Sat or SAT and SUN flights down there a routine for the past several years.

The weekend (especially Saturday) flights to the resorts have been around a long time. Back in 1978, my family flew the old National Air Lines from LAX-MIA, to catch a week-long cruise to the Caribbean (it was a Saturday 12:15am DC-10 flight). When your popular cruises depart on the weekends from their originating ports (MIA, FLL, likely SJU, etc), that's where you get the extra service.
