Airport Niederrhein Germany Does It Have A Future

A lot of money was invested in a big terminal and platform on the former base Laarbruch. The Dutch investor was fired recently ..

Only Ryan is already flying there. Passenger have to board in an old hanger at this time.

Connections are not that great, industry is reacting reserved.
Only secondary roads through villages with traffic light lead to this airport.

Will it ever be a successfull regional airport, or a failed boys dream ?

Hi,

At August 1 the new terminal was opened so no old hangar anymore.
The are indications that Vbird will start operating from Niederrhein with an Airbus A320. Route would be to Vienna three times per week.
This is all a bit uncertain, as the website of Vbird at www.vbird.com is not operational. The aircraft however is expected this Friday at Niederrhein for delivery.

Actually it is 3x per day (except the weekend).

Hey everyone

how are you all?

I find this new secondary airport 'fad' will probably end up crashing in the end. Airports like Hahn, Torp and that one outside Paris ( starting with B ??), these will all end up suffering from unpoularity in the end when people all reaslise how far away they really are from their intended destination.

The positive thing about these airports is that they can serve a secondary area market... but the airlines tat use these airports continue to market the destinations as Frankfurt, Oslo and Paris is not giving people a clear picture lof the area they are landing in.

This airport from the maps ive seen is soo far from Dusseldorf... it is more relevant to some of its still largish cities in its surrounding region.

The airports location is very well positioned for the region its in, and out of all the secondary airport locations in europe would have to be one of the best positions. They should start marketing it as other than dusseldorf and see what the airport really has to offer the ACTUAL surrounding area...

I had a quick look there a week ago. It didn't look finished then.

Are you sure it is open now ?

Don't you think by now people would have realised? How long has Ryanair been serving airports like Hahn?

The fact that millions of people CONTINUE to fly Ryanair (and other airlines which serve secondary airports) would seem to contradict your statement totally.

DoorsTo Manual has brought up a very good point regarding the somewhat one-sided logic behind the sometimes geographical remote position of secondary airports.

Furthermore, secondary airports are the best measure to cope with the (in the long run) increasing air traffic. With urban sprawl limiting the growth opportunities of the primary airports clos to the metropolitain areas, much of the traffic growth will have to take place at airports, which are further away from the city centers. Once demand increases, there will be a fundamental improvement of voth air- and landside infrastructure at these dormant airports.

Airports like CDG with vast land reserves and a relatively uncomplicated planning enviroment are scarce in Europe. LHR, LGW, FRA etc. will experience a physical end to their growth opportunity in the foreseeable future. At this point it will be come vital to provide the travelling public with functioning, well-connected (both via land and air transportation) relief airports.
