AA Starts LAX-SJU

AA is starting LAX-SJU service, non-stop. Will operate FrSa to SJU and SaSu from SJU with a 767-300ER. This is a former TWA route and will be one of AA's longest domestic routes, with only certain Hawaii routes being longer.

American Airlines will continue to operate thrice-daily, same plane LAX-SJU service with a stop in FLL.

AA operated the route for awhile after they acquired TW... this was one of TW's biggest losers.

This route could work on a twice weekly basis, TWA operated the route but it was on a daily basis (later reduced to weekends only ), and AA planned on opening this route a couple of years ago but the plans were shelved due to poor advance bookings. I believe the flight will be a aroundv 6 to 7 hours (or is it shorter ?) Wouldn't the 757 be better for the route ?
Good to have nonstop flights to the West Coast once again.

After AA bought TWA the route was discontinued like 3 months after the purchase. Im surprised AA is launching the route once again and with the 767-300.

IMHO - a portion of these seats I am sure are going to be sold to cruise lines for there pax, so it is a win win situation and sure money for the airline.

TW flew it with a 752.

During the time when TW had the SJU focus city most flights were either operated with the 757 or the MD-80 (the only exception was a daily 767-200 flight to JFK). What I meant was that AA intended to use the 767-300 when they were first planing to launch LAX-SJU back in 95 or 96 (whcih they never started because of poor advance bookings).

The route was operated years ago as a thru flight via MIA on a DC10, perhaps that is what you were thinking about.

Ryan, AA previously operated this route with a stop in DFW. It was flight 606, LAX-DFW-SJU with a 763.

If I remember correctly, I recall seeing an AA flight arriving in LAX in the early 90s from San Juan. I recall somebody saying it was a non-stop though. I could be wrong about the non-stop, or it could have been another Latin American destination that I am confusing with SJU. Were there any other flights that AA had to Latin America, or was this, in fact, not a non-stop and rather the flight mentioned above that stopped over in DFW??? Any answeres would be appreciated.

It was not a non stop, it was a thru flight via MIA.. It was flow using DC10 equip...

I used to work on the ramp in LAX for AA and in 1989-1990, we had A300 service LAX-SJU. Believe me, we had bags all over the place around the Christmas Holiday travel season. :-(

If AA uses a 767 on the route, it would be for the freight capacity, I would think. The 763 is configured 30/182, and for a total of 212 seats, where the 752 (after MRTC is gone) will be 22/166 for a total of 188. Not a huge difference in pax load available, so it must be the freight driving this a/c choice.

I am just so damn confused... I may have been thinking of TWA, because the first thing that came to me when I saw this thread was 757...Did AA ever do SFO-SJU?

No American has never done (SFO-SJU)- At least to my knowledge.

This is a surprise to me too, but airlines don't just begin routes out of nowhere.

After American reduced the San Juan hub so substantially, it seems odd that they are adding lines to San Juan.

Freight seems like a likely answer.
Or perhaps they're trying to ease some congestion in Miami by feeding Carribbean passengers through SJU.

I was just looking at the timing of this flight on the AA schedule. Maybe they are hoping to draw the winter cruise crowd. With an arrival into SJU at 10:24 it fits perfectly into getting people onto a cruise ship -- since most leave on Saturday or Sunday anyway.

The flight back (12:00noon) could be a little early but if you have a ship that docks at 8:00am it's possible for many people to make this flight.

You are right... It's timed for good connections to the cruise lines. I wouldn't be surprised to see the trip go to at least 5/7 sometime next year if it does well. Additionally, I think AA will be using the 763 because of the stage length. A 757 can make it one way, but because of the prevailing winds, I don't think that they can make it back the other way non stop.
