Who Will Be First In PVD, Song Or JetBlue?

Sat Aug 09, 2003 7:01 am

At the moment, I don't see either one interested in the Providence (southeastern New England) market. Anyone care to speculate?

I think that Song will be first in PVD beacuse it is backed by Delta JetBlue is by itself.

I think it would be Song, if either one comes. DL has served MCO-PVD until a couple of weeks ago, and Song is just in the process of launching. Once they get settled in, I could see MCO and FLL coming in once daily. I don't really see JetBlue coming in for a while, as the talk of JetBlue in the BOS area is that they will serve either BOS or MHT, so they have the potential to run transcon flights (PVD's 7500 ft runway can't handle a full A320 to LGB)

Southwest probably deters either...but I can see JetBlue going after the market with EMB190s after 2005. Song...who knows what their plans are...Probably chasing JetBlue and AirTran in whatever they do  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

If JetBlue comes in I could see Song right behind, if Song comes in first then who knows? I think like Planemannyc says above Song is pretty much going to chase whatever AirTran and JetBlue does, JetBlue and AirTran are going to do what is best for them as a business.

Jeff, runway 5/23 at PVD is 7,166 feet and WN flys NON-STOP to PHX with a 737-700 off that runway. And A330s operate to the Azores from there. A Song 757 could easily operate off that runway to MCO or FLL. Do the 73G CFM engines produce more thrust than jetBlue's IAE powered A320s? Just curious. On a side note, look at the heavies that operate from Maui's (OGG) mere 7,000 foot runway, so it CAN be done! St. Marteen (SXM) is another example.

I also think UA should do at least one daily NON-STOP to DEN out of PVD, as well. I think they run 5 daily to ORD right now, but AA also flys the same route, 4 times daily. Plus WN runs 2 or 3 a day to MDW. That's an awful lot of seats per day from PVD to the Chicago area. That's probably why ATA has kept clear of PVD. Seems to me there is some potentially good route opportunities that have been clearly overlooked and could be fully realized out of PVD. It's been pretty much status quo there lately. I haven't even seen any expansion by Southwest there in what, almost 2 years?...

PVD is really too small a market to fight over. I don't see either one doing anything at PVD in the near future. BDL, MHT, and BOS are far more likely, and PVD passengers will spill into those markets (esp. BDL and BOS, since they already do).

Cheers!

PVD is actually a larger market than MHT. Who knows for how much longer, though? MHT has been aggressively expanding their facilities.

Song would be much more likely at PVD. DLX had it's own gate and now that DLX is gone, Song could take that gate since DL already has it. Also, there is no room in the check-in area for a new airline's ticket counters, Song could just use DL's.

Song first, as they fly to BDL, JFK, LGA and EWR.... this would be a sensible progression

I just don't see either one in PVD. WN's just too well-ensconced there.

The same may be true about MHT, since WN is very firmly planted there as well. What's helping MHT or perhaps giving them the edge on attracting more air service, is that they are now boasting a much longer runway. This will be difficult for airport officials in PVD to convince the surrounding residential area that there is a need for a runway extension.
