AMS, I Love You :-)

Mon Aug 11, 2003 11:43 pm

Yesterday, driving around in my car I decided (as so often in the past) to watch some planes departing or landing from AMS. I was not there since the new runway is open (yeaphh a long time ago) and my fear was that the old place where I always went before at runway 01L-19R(our Dutch spotters know exactly where I mean) is closed for public and when arriving there my fear was approved! But suddenly I saw a
747-100 Kalitta Air followed by a 767-300ER KLM taxiing in direction to the new runway then I just followed the smell of jetfuel  Smile/happy/getting dizzy and my orientation ability and the reward was big because guess??? Yeaphh, I found myself next to the new runway (as in the good old times) without a fence between the departing 747's and myself, a spotters dream came true  Smile/happy/getting dizzy In seconds I felt in love again with that airport hmmmm what a fantastic place to be!!!

Sounds very good to me! Big grin

I've been to AMS three times (aways the observation deck) but loved it every time! Big grin

There are some great places arround the new runway (polderbaan) to make pictures!

Spotting arround Schiphol is quite good!, and pictures can be made verry close to runways.

Also if you stay at the Sheraton Airport hotel, connected to the airport, you can get a room with good vieuws over Schiphol airport.

The obsevation deck is also a great place to visit, and with 2 restaurants on the side.

I haven't checked the new runway yet. However there is a great great great taxiway going to that runway with lots of spotting opportunities!

The spot at the new polderbaan runway is just great. The pictures above show this. At the closest situation I wasn't possible to picture a 737 with 80mm so you are really close and you can actually see passengers wave at you (and the pilots ofcourse).

The runways itself has a decent possibilities for spotting but the long taxiway connecting the airport and the new runway (which is quite distant from the rest of the airport) is just splendid. There are 2 bridges over the taxiway where you have an almost unobstructed view (one over the new highway A5 and one over another road with a channell). There are some gates where you can easily put your camera through, one placed distantly from the airport so with a big lense you can take pictures there and one in a crash gates which is more suitable for cockpit close-ups or people with a 28mm camera.

On the overview picture you can clearly see the new taxiway at the left bottom.

So the new runway is the one practically in the middle of nowhere? Our BA captain warned us it would be a fairly long taxi but I honestly thought after 10 minutes of bumping past green fields that we'd be driving back to London.  Big grin
