It sounds like America West is targeting jetBlue instead of AA/UA. Good for them.
I disagree. They're taking dead aim at AA
, but with the idea of skimming customers from them, not creating mass defections.

already carries a good number of passengers LAX
...but they do it by funnelling them through PHX
, which is a less-than-efficient use of those hubs. It's like DL
did with Song; you take the "el cheapo" customer and throw 'em on nonstop, high-density service and bypass the hub, leaving it for higher-yield connecting traffic.
In this case, HP
gets everything they want. They free up PHX
for higher-yielding connecting traffic, keep their existing LAX
customers, and even ADD some thanks to their new nonstops. On top of all that, the majority of the new customers they'll be adding will be paying a higher average fare than they get elsewhere in their system.
Any hit against B6
will be the icing on the cake.
