The "skimming the rooftops" was in quotes - I didn't see it skim the rooftops and it's clearly an exaggeration. However, it certainly is unusual to hear an aircraft sound that loud in my office. I've been working in it for 3 years and I know what's usual to see over Princes Street.
Let me rephrase it: several people saw a jet airliner flying much lower than usual
over Edinburgh yesterday and maneouvering rather than flying straight over or turning gently once or twice, as they usually do (I live and work in Edinburgh, incidentally).
The last time I saw or heard anything like this it was just a BA
757 burning off fuel due to a minor problem before landing. Nevertheless, it certainly doesn't normally happen as has been suggested. People in Princes Street don't stop to look every time a plane goes over.
