Incident At Edinburgh?

Wed Aug 13, 2003 8:07 pm

Anyone hear of an incident at Edinburgh yesterday? I heard what sounded like a large jet about lunchtime. It was much louder than usual and several people told me they saw a "jet airliner - a 737 or something like that" flying low and turning sharply over the city centre "skimming the rooftops".

I doubt if it was "skimming the rooftops" but it could have been flying as low as 1000ft or maybe 1500 ft - this is not an unusual thing to see if you are standing in Princes Street most days, I have always thought it was simply a go-around but whatever it is it's fairly common.

Gordon.

The "skimming the rooftops" was in quotes - I didn't see it skim the rooftops and it's clearly an exaggeration. However, it certainly is unusual to hear an aircraft sound that loud in my office. I've been working in it for 3 years and I know what's usual to see over Princes Street.

Let me rephrase it: several people saw a jet airliner flying much lower than usual over Edinburgh yesterday and maneouvering rather than flying straight over or turning gently once or twice, as they usually do (I live and work in Edinburgh, incidentally).

The last time I saw or heard anything like this it was just a BA 757 burning off fuel due to a minor problem before landing. Nevertheless, it certainly doesn't normally happen as has been suggested. People in Princes Street don't stop to look every time a plane goes over.

You sure you wasn't a bit west of that in ayr with the 747's coming into land just over the roofs LOL. I remember seeing a JMC a320 I think doing that over Glasgow no idea about what u seen.

I'm surprised no-one reported that someone tried to shoot it down from the castle with a big gun at precisely 1 o'clock.

Sorry about that! Every day at 13:00 an old artillery gun is fired from Edinburgh Castle - not with live ammunition, of course. Scares the tourists no end.
