Japan Aviation & Quantas Question

Wed Dec 22, 1999 11:45 am

I have always pondered this question, does Japan have an airplane industry? Commercial? Any at all? I have never heard of Japanese planes. Maybe someone out there in the industry can tell me.
To my Australian friends, since when does Quantas fly to Buenos Aires (EZE)? Do you fly from Sydney? What is the flightpath like? Is it true you fly over Anctartica? Does Quantas fly anywhere else in Latin America? Hopefully someone from QF (I've seen you out there in the Forum) can answer me, I know that it's daytime over where you guys live. Thank You.

QANTAS does not fly to Buenos Aries, but their new partner Aerolíneas Argentinas does fly EZE-SYD.

LH423 Is Wrong QF Does Fly To B/Aires

Wed Dec 22, 1999 1:22 pm

Qantas does in fact fly between Sydney and B/Aires in its own right via Auckland. Qantas' south American partner is in fact now Lan Chile a one world partner. The Aircraft is a B747-400 and does indeed fly over Antartica. For the record Aerolineas Argentineas flys an A340 and is pretty much the same route. And no they do not suck, a least they would be able to tell the correct spelling of Qantas and would be able to put LH423 correct about his widely mistaken views about where Qantas does and does not fly too.

Japanese A/C Industry Mitsu/Honda

Wed Dec 22, 1999 3:23 pm

I know Mitsubishi makes some fighter craft, but I don't know of anything commercial.

Interesting note: Honda (as in the auto manufacturer) unvieled some turbofans about a year or so ago, and were planning to put them on a business-jet size airframe of their own design. I do not believe any of this is ready for sale yet, but Honda does (or did) have intentions of entering the aircraft industry initially as a powerplant producer and later as an airframe constructor.

Qantas also codeshares with AR over the SYD EZE route, as well as flying it itself.
QF115 ops SYD AKL EZE and QF116 ops the return.

RE: Aerolineas Argentinas

Wed Dec 22, 1999 8:40 pm

Sp-deluxe:
Come on! First, I think QANTAS (see I can spell?) is a better airline than Aerolineas Argentinas. Second, do you honestly believe the airline is better today than say, even 10-20 years ago? I don't think so. Although they are slowly renewing their fleet, they need an MAJOR image overhaul, & in their livery. It's not bad, it's just exactly like Iberia's, in different colors. They need their own identity, hopefully soon. I have a little Argentine in me (American born, I lived in Mendoza for over 4 years), & a think such a beautiful & great nation deserves a flagship airlines just like Lufthansa, or British Airways. Varig (Brazil), & Lan Chile today are seen as better airlines. So when I say they suck, it is from that perspective. Be lucky.

AKL-EZE Over Antarctica?

Thu Dec 23, 1999 7:33 am

Do the Auckland-Buenos Aires nonstops really go over Antarctica? The direct route would only get down to 58 deg 14 min south latitude, and a deviation over Antarctica would add at least a couple hundred miles to the trip. Is there scenery, or are they staying close to an emergency airfield? (Never heard of EFOPS or EQOPS, but it's true the Pacific is extra empty down there.)

I was under the impression that some Japanese companies were (major?) suppliers/subcontractors to manufacturers such as Boeing?

Hello Derico,

You asked interesting questions. I will help answering the ones the others haven’t pointed out yet:

Q: I have always pondered this question, does Japan have an airplane industry?
A: Both Japan and Germany were refrained to build any aircraft after the Second World War. I am quite sure that Japan will be allowed to rebuild its airliner industry after the year 2000. The same treat was imposed to Germany but it probably expired a few years ago, because it has Airbus plants within its national territory. Both countries still not allowed to manufacturing any military plane as far as I know.

Q: To my Australian friends, since when does Qantas fly to Buenos Aires (EZE)? Do you fly from Sydney? What is the flightpath like? Is it true you fly over Anctartica? Does Qantas fly anywhere else in Latin America?
A: Yes. Qantas flies to EZE but it does not use the Transpolar Route, like Aerolineas Argentinas used to do when flying to Auckland only. Aerolineas flew a 747-200 in this route (with a stop over in Rio Gallegos) before the A-340 joined its fleet. Qantas flies to Santiago (Chile) as well, through a code-sharing agreement with Lan Chile. The route is Sydney-Auckland-Pipette-Easter Island-Santiago.

Cheers!

Honda Effort

Sun Dec 26, 1999 7:19 am

I'm going to bring this topic back to the top of the list where it will get noticed, it doesn't seem to be getting much attention.

Anyway, does anyone know of the Honda effort I talked about on this thread on 22.12.99? I haven't heard anything about it since last year, and was interested in how it was going.

Thanks and happy holidays.

RE: Qantas

Sun Dec 26, 1999 1:06 pm

Qantas started its own route from Sydney to Buenos Aires (via Auckland) in November 20 1998, operating a B747-400 twice a week. For the inaugural they used Wunala Dreaming.

As far as I know neither Aerolineas Argentinas or Qantas fly over Antartica. I have seen AR´s flight maps and they fly close but not over. In fact a newspaper article done with a B747 captain two years ago, explained that there is a line in the Pacific that if the aircraft is before that in case of an emergency it comes back to South America and if its beyond they should continue to Aukland or Christchurch.

For example from Buenos Aires, the A340 flies down to the Bariloche area, then onto Chile over Puerto Montt and then across the Pacific continuing onto Auckland. Then the other leg straight to Sydney. The return trip is faster from Auckland, around 11 hours because they have tail winds.
