How Many Pax Can A Tristar Carry In A 3 Classes.

Sat Aug 16, 2003 9:06 am

I was surprised to hear a L1011 tristar could carry 302 passenger in a two class system but I remember Delta putting a business class in there tristar for trans Atlantic flights. So I wonder how many passerger a three class tristar can carry.

Do you mean a 1/50/100/150/200/250 or a 500?

It really depends on if you went 9 or 10 across in coach, but most likely 260-300 ish.

ACEregular......I take it you're talking about Brtish Airtours/Caledonian Airways TriStars with a 393 pax config.....pretty tight, but beaten by CourtLine in the 70s with their 400 seater pastel planes.

Yes I flew on Caledonian's Tristar G-BBAI. It was 393 seats, what a sight. Thanks for the info on CourtLine Edina, the extra seven seats where obviously downstairs in the galley, so they could keep an eye the ovens for the cabin crew.

The 393Y configuration was only possible due to the special door configuration of these TriStars. While the regular longbody L1011's had small service doors on No.4 (left and right) position, the high-capacity TriStars had the regular large doors in order to comply with evacuation standards:

AFAIK, only BA's custom-built longbody L1011's (operatd by Caledonian and BA) were reconfigured this way.

There are serveral issues here:

1. L1011-1/100/250 or L1011-500?

2. 9 or 10 abreast in economy (although when introduced most airlines had 8 abreast in economy).

3. What type of business/first class are you talking about? The international standard business and first class products now offered were simply not available when most L1011s were operating.....now 50-60 inch pitch and flying beds are common up front, back then, most business and first class products had 34-40 inch pitch.

Most airlines had about 30 premium and 220 economy seats in their L1011-1s, and about 30 premium and 190 economy seats in their L1011-500s. Charter carriers of course had more, and those that used the 1011s for longer range services had less due to larger, most spacious premium cabins or 3 class arrangements.
