SQ A345 To Be Premium Service

Sat Aug 16, 2003 2:14 pm

There is this article on CNN.

http://edition.cnn.com/2003/BUSINESS/08/15/singapore.air.reut/index.html

So when some said it is going to be two class service, it may be just F & J, not J & Y?
Interesting.

Is there actually going to be enough business traffic between SIN and LAX to support 200 seats a few times weekly?

Soon the SIA fleet will be confusing -

744/A380 for long haul high demand routes
773ER or A346 for long haul medium demand routes
A345 for premium high business traffic routes
773 for regional high density routes
772ER for long haul lower demand routes
772 for regional routes

Maybe the will introduce some sort of Premium Economy Class aimed at those "high end leisure travellers"? They definitely need to increase the leg room for people flying Economy to last through such a flight!
What is the actual time saved by dropping the stop at other places?

If I'm not mistaken the flight via TPE is around 18.30 hours including the stopover, isnt that rougly the same as the proposed non-stop flight?

Who would want to sit 19-20 hours in an Y class seat? No thanks, I'd rather change a couple of times.

You know, if LH can fill (more or less) 50 C class seats a day from DUS to ORD, even tho FRA is nearby with 3-4 nonstops a day, I have no doubts that SQ will fill those birds. Mind you, its a hub-hub service.

The flights from SIN to LAX take 17.15 (SQ 12, stop in NRT) and 18.00 hours (SQ 30, stop in TPE), the return flights though take 20.15 and 20.25 hours, respectively. If you do the maths you come to an average of 19.00 hours including the stop-overs. The 18 hours mentioned in articles is the time an A345 can fly, it's like naming the range. This doesn't mean the SIN-LAX flight takes 18 hours, even if it does take that long on average you'll for sure gain an hour.
In my opinion you'll gain about 3 hours, let's say about 15 hours to go and 17 to come back ?

772ER for long haul lower demand routes
772 for regional routes

Contrary to popular belief, SQ does not operate 772As... all of their 772s are 772ERs.

Interesting approach......when CX was looking at JFK-HKG nonstop with A343, it was rumored that their flights would also be geared to business passengers with either no economy seating or a very limited economy class section.

I guess this makes sense for several reasons:

17-19 hours nonstop in a conventional coach cabin is very long and can get very uncomfortable, regardless of the IFE system and good cabin service.

Revenue is optimized by offering only business/first seats.....I imagine cargo capcacity on these long haul flights will be limited to ensure that nonstop service can be offered, so atleast there is money to be made in the passenger cabin.

Is this going to be the beginning of a trend........airlines offering a FIRST CLASS fleet and an economy fleet?

Well, that, and the payload restriction created by operating with only 190 seats would be about the only way one of CX's A343s could make the nonstop roundtrip distance yearround.

Which CX A343 has only 190 seats?
According to their timetable, the most premium one (with the New Business Class) seats 243 pax.

AFAIK, the SQ 345s will be J/Y. Config will be something like 65/110.

The three 343s that CX bought from SQ are configured 8/60/125 or something like that.

While I think the SQ A340-500's will be able to fly between LAX and SIN non-stop most of the year, I wouldn't be surprised that the A345 will occasionally need to stop at HKG for a fuel stop during the winter. I have heard that SQ 747-400's flying the SQ 001 route from SFO to HKG sometimes have to refuel either in Japan or Okinawa during the winter.

Only if SQ1 has a full load and unfavourable wind factors the flight would need an extra fuel stop. Rarely happen indeed but as RayChuang mentioned, did stop in Osaka last year sometime for re-fuel.

Best Regards

Dutchjet, the concept of having different a/c dates WAY back to the prop days. At one time, UA's services to HNL from SFO and LAX (at that time, their only Hawaii services) were operated with a DC-6B in a coach configuration and a Stratocruiser (subsequently a DC-7) in a First Class (Red Carpet) service. Only with the inaugural of the DC-8 did UA have two class service on the same A/C. (Any of you older "Mainliners", correct me if I'm wrong!)

Ex_SQer,

That configuration showed up briefly after CX bought the 3 A343s from SQ, that is when they were going to introduce HKG-NYC direct service.
Has dissapeared since on their timetable, though.
I wonder if the config still exists.

RayChuang / 9V-SPK,

How often / how rare does this refuelling thing happen on SQ1?
Don't the passengers complain, expecting a non-stop service?

Refuelling I suspect usually occurs during the Northern Hemisphere's winter months... Back in 2001, Mr.Ba and I were in HKG and SQ1 came in 2 hrs late. We found out later from SQ1's captain that they had to tech stop in TPE to refuel even though when they departed LAX they took on a full load of fuel, and offloaded some cargo. They had pretty strong headwinds during the flight.

None do now. When in 2001 however, when CX proposed HKG-JFK nonstop with an A343... that configuration would have been necessary and it's what they advertised.

Yup, unscheduled stops occur during the northern winter, even with a full load of fuel and sometimes zero cargo. For SQ1 the most common diversion point is TPE or of things are really bad, Japan. More often than not these diversions are actually planned.
