Eastern Airlines On Simpsons Tonight

Mon Aug 18, 2003 8:34 am

I think that the Simpsons episode featuring Eastern Airlines is on Fox Tonight... at 1900 CDT.

I remember that one! It was the one when they go to disney world, and that crappy ride "starship earth" is sponsored by Eastern.

Another funny thing about Eastern and Disney, Eastern was the official operator from 1970's-1986 and had the ride "IF YOU HAD WINGS"

Then that ride became Delta's skydreamer or something.

I guess DL is not the official operator at Disney anymore!

After DL took over the sponsorship, "If You Had Wings" became "Dreamflight." It remained "Dreamflight" even after DL dropped the sponsorship, until a couple years ago when it became the BuzzLightyear ride.

I don't know if Delta is a sponsor or not, but they are the "official" airline for the Disney Travel Company. Book through delta for a Disneyland vacation and you get a sweet deal on airfare. All Disney Vacations packages booked through Disney Travel will put you on a Delta Air Lines flight, or an associated carrier.

I thought the Eastern Latin America jingle was Eastern - Las Alas Del Hombre or something like that .
Going back to the Simpsons episode-
- everything on the ride had the Eastern logo on it . What was especially funny was the personalized Eastern flying car (I want one of those)

Eastern used "Las alas del hombre" years before changing to "Las alas de America" other spanish slogans included..."Esto si es volar!" and developed specifically for the SJU-NYC market..."Volar por Eastern a New York, esto si es volar!"...this last jingle was sung by the late Celia Cruz while walking thru the cabin of an L1011 until she arrived at her seat and sat down next to her husband. It was quite a memorable TV commercial...Also EA used "The wings of man" for their English ads during the early 70s.....

Eastern was also the sponsor of a ride at CAROWINDS at Charlotte,NC. It was
the North Carolina version of the space needle. Eastern had a huge hub in Charlotte until 1984. Piedmont built their Charlotte Operation into a fortress until they were absorbed by US Airways yadda yadda blah blah blah

I liked the part about Eastern Airlines' plans for world domination! Giant robots with Eastern a/c for heads.

OK, I'm confused! How did that piss Delta off? What, Airtran not allowed to advertise?

I would imagine that DL always picked up these joint promotions with the Florida tourism board, tho since I am sure they have to supply some money they might have hesitated and AirTran saw a chance to get the exposure. Also keep in mind Joe Leonard did come from Eastern and he has contacts to get these type of contracts and such, especially now that AirTran is growing.

Slightly off topic, but I mioss Eastern. They were a great airline. Wich they were still around, alongside Pan Am and TWA, the other airline 'greats'.

Braniff would be fun too.  Smile Sigh, the old days. I barely remember the years EA and PA were around but I still miss those airlines.  Sad

FYI:

Delta is no longer the Official Airline of Disneyland and the Walt Disney World Resort.

There has been no 'Official Airline' since January 1, 1996.

I don't like your tone, but I will explain it again just for you. Delta practically own(ed) the florida market. Now the more LCCs that come into FLorida, The more you can bet they are getting ticked. See See.

I used to LOVE that ride! If you had wings, had wings, had wings, had wings......... I nearly pissed my pants the first time I saw that Simpsons episode!!!

BR715-A1-30,

Delta has a tiny presence in MIA. I wouldn't say they "own" Florida. From here, I could hop around the state on any number of airlines from Gulfstream, to AirTran to of course AA! Florida is not anyone's market per se. Unlike when Eastern ruled the world....
