Former NW Route LAX-SYD

Why did Northwest discontinue their service LAX-SYD in the early 90s? I used to work that flight NW73 and it was full every night. The belly was full of cargo too. Any ideas?

The primary reason: the flights to SYD (LAX-SYD, OSA-SYD and HNL-SYD) were operated during the worst years of NW’s existence and the company absorbed heavy losses on them... the flights weren’t full – NW was selling tickets for $199OW on LAX-SYD in the final months before the flight was cancelled. Also, they failed to generate any business within the premium cabin – loads were horrific and among the worst in company history.

Another reason: speculation that Australia themselves helped kill the flight... they imposed restrictions on the successful OSA-SYD flight (no more than 50% of pax may originate from Japan) and were very upset with NW ... also, one of the government figures was dating-engaged-married to the head of UA’s Australia operations – this, plus other factors, lead many to think that Australia was showing favoritism toward UA.

NW may be able to succeed status quo on an LAX-SYD flight, but there’s still tons of bitterness within the company and I doubt they'll try again...

Hey Industrial Pate, Another thing I heard about that route is that NW leased the route authority for it to NZ. Have you ever heard that? Because shortly after NW dropped LAX-SYD, NZ started it. Also if it is only being leased to NZ, does that mean that NW still OWNS that route authority certificate?

NW’s retained dormant rights to the route (as well as HNL-SYD) since they dropped it in 1994...if NW had interest in reviving it, they probably would’ve done so by now (with many nervous UA flyers + NZ exiting the route). I think NW’s too bitter to try it again (losses + experience, etc.)

At one point, I remember that they did not have enough 747-400s to make the routing competitive (stop in HNL).

Thats incorrect. NW had plenty of 744s operating by the time the SYD service commenced. The route was purchased from HA and originally NW only had the authority to serve SYD from HNL and it was operated with a 742. Later it was transferred to LAX-SYD nonstop with a 744.

Insufficient premium traffic on the route as the nonstop flights weren't daily and you need frequency.

The former head of United in Australia, Ann Keating (recently asked to leave) was the Prime Minister's sister- however, no favoritism was shown as UA wasn't allowed to commence their SYD-NRT flights.

NW only had authority to fly LAX-SYD 3x/week...this may have hurt high fare business traffic against the daily (or more) UA and QF skeds. Also, as mentioned NW faced restrictions on the 4x weekly SYD-OSA route making it unprofitable. NW pulled out of both routes simultaneously in April 1994.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

NW actually operated SYD-KIX for a while longer after SYD-LAX was discontinued. It was operated only once weekly at the very end.

Do you remember the 747-100 sitting on the ground in SYD (inbound from OSA) for 2 days at a time?!? With scheduling like that, NW never really had a chance.

NWA also briefly during the same time period flew HNL-Brisbane, with a DC-10.
