CO is much better. They serve a larger variety of nationwide destinations (as opposed to US's focus on the East) and more international routes. In addition, CO's aircraft are generally more comfortable and service is better. CO is also a better-run company, although US is making improvements.

The only real aspect I find US to be better than CO in is international coach class on the A330, I took a leg LGW-PHL on one several years ago and was thoroughly impressed. There was a lot of legroom, good food, and great entertainment. I don't think that's changed with the reorganization. Their domestic First used to be very good as well, especially on transcons, but they've really cut back in the last year or so and now US isn't even an option for my business travel unless it is the only way to get where I'm going.

Continental has a much more comprehensive nationwide route network. US Airways offers more Caribbean destinations, but Continental has a larger European network.

I've flown both carriers, and IMO, Continental has better onboard service. They still serve meals or snacks on most flights, while US Airways has no longer serves meals for free. They must be purchased, and this can only be done on flights of 700 miles or longer.

CO

Better route network, more options with domestic partners (though its UA and Star Alliance relationship are young), better global service.

Definitely Continental. Much higher standard of plane interiors.

CO by a mile. For all the reasons listed by Ssides, CODC10, N670UW, B4real, Danny and Tan Flyr, but also because CO crew is much nicer...not grumpy.

US Airways is certainly a much better airline today than it was, even just one year ago. I flew US repeatedly throughout the 1980's and 1990's (pre and post Piedmont/PSA mergers) and it was consistently awful in terms of service, punctuality, and routings, but somehow, it worked.

As far as overall service, my vote naturally goes to Continental. A much broader network, overall better product consistent across all aircraft (Envoy is great on the A330 but it sucks on the 767, whereas BusinessFirst is consistent on the 777, 767-400, -200, and 757.

CO has an incredible frequent-flyer programme. As soon as you make a reservation, your OnePass number is entered into the system and if you are an Elite, you are automatically queued for an upgrade...no coupons, no calling 24/48/72 hours in advance as on DL. I have been just Gold on CO for 3 years, fly at least once a month and have sat in coach maybe four times. Their Y class catering is appalling (those meatloaf sandwiches heated in plastic bags!!!), but F is very good, and I have found the crews invariably happier, kinder and friendlier than on DL or UA. One sour note is they don't use widebodies for as many flights as DL does; I have been on far more 75s and 73s than I would like. But overall we have found them far superior to Delta, to whom we were loyal for years.

CO on Frank Lorenzo's worst day was better than Allegheny will ever be.

The preceding post is in memory of Piedmont and PSA.

I agree that Continental is better, but living in the D.C. area I've gotten to fly a little bit on US Airways and must say they have gotten better. They still fly some old ratty 737s, but their 319s/320s are nice, and I even got one of their shiny 757s from BWI to Charlotte which was a treat. I also like their ala' carte menu. I had a muffalatta sandwich with all the fixins' that could almost rival anything you would get in the Big Easy. I don't fly Continental as much as I used to for the simple reason that unless I'm going to the Southwest and am changing planes in Houston there really is no reason for me to fly them, and even then I'm going to try and get on America West or Southwest since they offer non-stop service out of all three D.C. area airports.
