Which Airline Is Going To Make YWG A Hub

Thu Dec 23, 1999 4:31 am

Does any one know which airline is going to have a hub here in Winnipeg? Since CXP is going who gets their Jetways/ticket counters? Which Airline do you think. Please let me know.

No airline will make a hub in Winnipeg. Think of it, wich airline would do that. NONE. If your thinking of AC, too late, they chose Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal-Dorval as there main hubs a long time ago. Canadian won't do it either, there hubs are in Vancouver and Calgary. Maybe WestJet, but there hub is already in Calgary and I wouldn't bet on it having it in Winnipeg. I know this sounds a little dissapointing to you, but who knows what the futur might bring.

Give it up already. I know, you know and everybody else knows that Winnipeg will NOT be a hub for any major airline in the near future. And if you havn't heard the news, AC is selling off some of its gates and slots in the terminal to "foster competition". This means even less flights a day. You need flights, routes and people to make a hub and Winnipeg has none of that. Calgary will be a hub before Winnipeg.

ACA340
Actually AC is selling CP gates. Not AC gates. Most likely WJ ,MM,and QN will get 1 each. As for CP ticketing AC is selling to the other Canadian Carriers.
Thats what I heard was going to happen.

A Hub?

Thu Dec 23, 1999 8:41 am

I don't know if this would qualify as a hub, because it involves changing airlines, but today in the newspaper Mr. Kenneth Rowe, chairman of IMP Group which wants to start CanJet said specifically that although no talks had occurred, he would be interested in entering an agreement where WestJet and CanJet would feed passengers to each other at Winnipeg. So we'd be talking about YWG as a hub in terms of that alliance, for east-west traffic. Also, even if CanJet and WestJet don't operate as an alliance, it is very possible that either of the two airlines operate YWG as a hub. The reason is simple- they fly short hop jet aircraft. I was talking to my friend on the YYC ramp, and he said that WJ didn't have any extended range 737's, so they might stop in YWG, as they couldn't fly Calgary to Hamilton non-stop with their current aircraft. That's not saying that YWG would be a hub, but it isn't totally inconcievable that it would happen. Also, although it appears now that the deal won't happen, Mr. Deluce's bid to buy all of the AC and CP regionals specifically proposed to make YWG a hub. So don't say that it never will be. Just maybe not for some time.

Not To Get Off Topic, But....

If WestJet got their 737's from Canadian. And Canadian flies them YYC-YYZ non stop, how come WestJet can't? Can an ER plane be converted to a non ER plane?

Yes AC183 is right again.(truthful) If WJ and Canjet feed their pax through YWG then its considered a hub for WJ and Can Jet.Then this means that there had better be a major expansion to take place. A good example of that is YYC. Look at how their A concourse got a whole add on terminal attached to it. Gates 16 -20(i think) thats one idea YWG should take into consideration.

Hey YWG777, i agree with Aviationman and noise, there is no way Winnpeg man be a hub unfortunatley. I don't see any airline in the near futur making Winnipeg there hub. Maybe YWG will ba a hub, but not any time soon.

As far as YYC-YYZ with 737's, I'm not sure CP does that. It's possible that they do, but I thought they were using A320's on that route. I dunno. Not that it matters. WJ got its 737's from various sources, only a few are former Canadian Airlines aircraft. Also, WJ uses older aircraft. WJ's 737's are mostly from the early to mid '70's, but CP has early '80's aircraft. I think CP's current 737's are also 737-200adv which may be why they could possibly fly YYC-YYZ. I don't believe WJ has any 737advanced aircraft. I'm not totally sure, of all that, it's just what I was told by my friend on the CP ramp.

As Long As We're Off Topic...

Thu Dec 23, 1999 11:54 am

I think this is kind of relevant, but maybe not totally to the topic. It affects YWG as a hub, anyways. I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about the future of Calm Air with AC/CP? AC has been told to sell off Canadian Regional Airlines, and 45% of Calm Air is held by CP through Canadian Regional. Will the Calm Air stake be sold along with Canadian Regional? Or will it be sold along with Regional to make Regional a more attractive entity? Can anyone say for sure?

I am just wondering if calm air will remain calm air. I think calm air will still be operating out of YWG.

Today on the Flight Channel in YWG I have been noticing alot of MM. I must of counted over 10 flights arriving and departing YWG. I think this is the start of a MINI HUB

YWG777, there is one thing which would determine whether it is a hub or not. That is, do a significant number of passengers change planes here? I'm not sure of that. But if passengers don't change planes, then it's not a hub by the very definition of what a hub is. Otherwise, it may just be a fuel stop, or a terminating flight.

AC183 is right. I don't see any airline in the near futur choosing Winnipeg as a hub. Although your probabbly wondering why praticly all major airports is home to a hub except for Winnipeg is the reason AC183 just said.

Sorry

Aarghhh! This Is Making ME Sick!

Is this board turning into the Airliners.net General Winnipeg Discussion? I logged on today and 3 of the first six threads are about Winnipeg, generally all asking the same questions! How many do we need?

NWA Man:

I think it's an epidemic. YWG's been the main topic around here for the past I don't know how long. If we're going to discuss Canadian airports in depth, let adjust the topics to include airports that are on the move and doing stuff, like YYZ or YVR.

Tom in NO

P.S. I think Winnipeg stands about as good a chance of getting a hub as does New Orleans of getting another one. Reasons 1) lack of infrastructure 2) existing hubs in Canada amply serve the existing and short-term future market 3) could Winnipeg generate enough local traffic to additionally support a hub

I agree with the irritation of too much posting on this topic. There is way too much rumour and speculation, and not nearly enough patience and willingness to wait and see what happens with regards to YWG service. I apologize if I have at all dragged out some of these discussions, but I have a certain fixation on topics to do with aviation on the Canadian prairies, and I do hate to leave some stuff without correcting misconceptions or adding my two bits if I think its relevant. For those folks who add repeated new postings on the same topics, or even just wishful thinking about whatever airline, could we please keep it down to maybe just one posting at a time, and not clutter the board so much. And really, there doesn't always have to be a YWG topic on the board. There is such a thing as one or two months between anything significant happening that is worth discussing... And there are lots of other topics worthy of discussion. AC fleet plans, happenings to Canadian Regional, expansion of WestJet, and many others to do with Canadian aviation, and a multitude of aircraft related, and international aviation related ones. Also, I think there are people that think way too much of YWG, and aren't too realistic about what can happen. However, there are also those who don't think highly enough of it. Reality is that there is a middle ground, and I'm rather tired about the 'major hub' and 'never a hub' arguments- reality is that it's potential is somewhere in the middle.
