I believe the 747's have the best performance. Does anyone fly higher and faster? I don't think the Airbus competition does, not even the 777.
Any thoughts?

Excuse me for putting it so bluntly, but what are you talking about? What are you trying to compare here?

I belive he's trying to compare the operating ceilings (not sure if that's the right term) and max crusing machs for different aircraft. I'm sure other people have much more detailed data, but I remember something in Airways magazine a while ago where they had to correct themselves that the 747 did not have the highest crusing mach, rather the 727 did. That is, of course not including the concorde! I believe it was mach .83 that the 727 could cruise at as opposed to the 747(-400)'s mach .82, but my memory is very sketchy. I'm sure someone can add better details.

If cruising speed is the criteria then lets not forget the Convair 990s

Except for Concorde!
To clearify, if you look at the 747's overall package (cmax cruising speed, ceiling, range, # of passengers, etc), I don't think you will find one plane that honestly say it is better.

Kind of confusing but I do believe that for now, excluding Concorde, the 744 does have the highest speed over a large distance like that. I think they can cruise for long range at 0.85. I think the 777 is only a little slower at 0.84 but take a Citation X and it'll do 0.92. I think the 'X' is the fastest excluding Concorde.
