Taiwan Vs China Vs Boeing

Tue Aug 19, 2003 10:14 pm

Here’s a conundrum…

Taiwan’s president, Annette Lu, claims Boeing officials canceled her scheduled visit to a Boeing facility under pressure from communist China. Boeing currently has a 10 747-400 order on the books from China Air (Taiwanese) worth approximately 2 billion dollars. However, mainland China might be a huge Boeing customer when the Chinese start buying jets.

Are 10 747-400 orders in the hand worth an unknown quantity of orders in the bush?

(As of Monday, there’s no evidence China put any pressure on Boeing to cancel the president’s visit.)

That doesnt make any sense.... was it not Boeing who demanded that the Taiwanese order those 747s to begin with?! As I recall, CI only wanted A330s for their next disaster addition Big grin

Annette Lu is Taiwan's vice-president...and no, the 747-400Fs are still in the order books. To be realistic, I don't think Airbus will let a Taiwanese vice-president to visit what's Taiwan gonna do, not buy any jets?
