Will The Majors Fly To Urumqi And Lhasa Ever?

Wed Aug 20, 2003 8:59 pm

Most of the big east Asian carriers like Korean Air, Asiana, JAL, ANA, Thai, Malaysia and Singapore Airlines are expanding in China, any chances of them flying to Lhasa and Urumqi up ahead? Urumqi gets airlines from neighbouring Siberia, Kyrghyzstan, Afghanistan and perhaps some others, PIA were there in the 70's and may return some day, Lhasa however does not have any foreign airlines there, they could perhaps do with Indian, Royal Nepal and Druk Air from their neighbourhood too. Hope that the majors will also go to these places, I see Thai as pioneering these routes in the future.

I think Royal Nepal does a Kathmandu-Lhasa, can someone confirm?
Never argue with idiots. They will bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience.

i was in lhasa last summer and there was a kathmandu-lhasa flight, i believe operated by royal nepal.

there really is no telling what airlines will be allowed to fly into lhasa or urumqi. the chinese gov't obviously restricts flights into its country, and even more into the tibetan autonomous region (tar). as far as i know, aside from the kathmandu flight aboard royal nepal, the only other choice is china southwest to beijing or to shanghai (via xining and xian).

Lhasa-Kathmandu was operated by China Southwest(SZ), it is now being operated as Air China as the two carriers merge, Urumqi already gets their share of foreign airlines as posted in the topic. I doubt if Royal Nepal fly there.

Qatar Airways were considering extending some of their Doha - Khatmandu flights into Lhasa for European trekkers. Nothing came of that though but it is always a possibility in the future.

I think Turkish is interested in serving Urumqi, due to the ethnicity of the Xinjiang region.

I hope Qatar Airways pursue that idea.

i stand corrected about the kathmandu-lhasa flights. thank you for correcting me. is there really that much demand for other carriers? i was there in august, and while the flights were crowded, they were not completely full. and that was aboard a 757. i know china southwest flies an a-340 too, so perhaps just larger planes are needed. with that said, for travelers coming from the indian subcontinent or the west, i'm sure it is inconvenient to have to fly a chinese carrier from the east.

We just did a charter flight to Urumqi from Hong Kong. A 747-200 B-HVZ flew more than 50 retired racehorces there.
