Spotting At LAX

Wed Aug 20, 2003 11:59 pm

I recall there used to be a road along 25R that had a parking/grassy area from which to watch. Been a while. Still there, or blocked off for security? Any other areas that afford good viewing?

Thanks in advance.

It was closed several years back and the entire area was redesigned. Now Westchester Pkwy. cuts through there. Its a divided two-lane expressway between Sepulveda and Pershing Dr. There is still a trurnoff there where you can spot planes. The best spot is on the south side of LAX right off of westbound Imperial Hwy turn south on Main St. in El Segundo and make an immediate left onto Imperial Ave. go past the car wash and up the hill for an excellent overall view of the southern side of LAX. They even have benches as its a very popular viewing area.

Try the small grassy area adjacent to the parking lot at In N Out Burger @ Sepulveda/Lincoln Blvds. You'll have a great view of all the arrivals on 24R.

You can still get onto the grassy hills just north of 24R, but it involves parking several blocks away in the apartment communities north of Westchester Parkway and walking it. Expect to be questioned by security personnel at least once if you're there for any length of time.

Imperial is still the easiest bet.

There many places that you can go. There is a new parking structure off of Sepulveda and Alver Vida check to spelling when you go look for it. It behind the In N Out burger on Sepulveda, for any L1011 tristar fans in the LA area you should visit this parking struture on Saturdays between 7:00 and 8:00 am no later than 7:00. Because ATA mooring flight to Cancun Mexico is operate by a L1011 tristar and it is the only one hear so do not miss it. Also if there any body that would like to see a 747 200 that flying on trans pacific, it is best to there today between 1:00 and 2:00 because Northwest flight 1 to Tokyo is operated by a 747 200 both these use runway 24 usually.
There is also a hill behind Imperial Highway across from the end of runway 25. I think this is the same place that BAGSMASHER was taking about. I call it Imperial Hill. If you ever wonder how a fully loaded Boeing 747 400 take off, go there between 10:00 pm and 1:00am that when most flight going to ACK, SYD or MEL. Those UA, QF and NZ 747 400 make such a rumble that you can feel it when you watching from the hill. They use most of the runway and they take off right in front of you. Enjoy

747400SP: on that parking structure you talked about, which is next to In-n-Out, it is prohibited to take pictures on any floor. I went there last week, saw signs on the roof level. I also gave them a call, and they told me that no one is allowed to take pictures because of """security reasons""".
Of course I don't see what the big deal is; as posters in this thread already wrote, there are plenty of other spaces in the area that are 1) closer or 2) give a better view of the airport, but a warned person counts for two -- as we say in Dutch.

Security reasons my ass. We might as well ban all cameras within a 10 mi radius of an airport then.

Which of the hotels near LAX offer good spotting views from rooms? I know ther is a Hilton and a Hyatt. near the entrance.

The rental car lots got some reat views while you are waiting to pickup or return your car. Especially the Hertz, and National. Don't know about the others.

I love going to spot at LAX because I can eat an In-n-Out burger as a 747 flies 50 feet over my head-two of the best things in life. This area (that Aaron 747 mentioned) may not offer the best view of the airport, but it's terrific for landings.

The LAX Hilton offers great views on the top floors. My favorite place is under the 24R arrival path, next to In-N-Out. This location is well known for a good reason...747's screaming overhead at a few feet.

I'll be at LAX just one day, Oct 20.
If I don't want to leave the airport, I arrive on Southwest, where would I go?

Isn't there a fairly new parking garage (looked like 5 or 6 floors) somewhere off Aviation Blvd, about 3 blocks north of the nudie bar (on Century)? My daughter and I spent an hour or so on a sidestreet in that area in March watching the action. It looked like it would be good for traffic on the north parallels.

Dispatch:

Not much to offer at the airport. Southwest is at Terminal 1, and from that terminal would be some of the best views of takeoff from 24L and R. If you want to be outside, on the sidewalk between Terminals 1 and 2 is a view to Runways 24R and L. The Southwest terminal is the worst for security screening. Be prepared for a long line to get back in.

If you want to leave the terminal, the Encounter restaurant in the center Theme building might be an alternative, I haven't been there in a long time though.

I really love Imperial Hill! Off the 105 freeway adjacent to Imperial Highway.

Directions: Imperial Highway west, past Sepulveda Blvd. Turn left on Main St., quick left on E. Imperial Avenue.

I was there yesterday after dropping off a friend at LAX and the city of El Segundo is still performing construction on the sidewalks and curbs. Still, the views of LAX and 24L & R are un-obstructed.

Does anyone know if the Theme Building Observation deck (above Encounter restaurant) will ever re-open? Or is it open now?
