By gosh! I guess that means the end of Alianza Summa. Only Avianca and its subsidiary SAM will be left flying. It's rather shameful because ACES was known for providing better service over Avianca's product. No doubt, it would have been tragic to have lost Avianca, the oldest airline in the Americas. Hopefuly Avianca reorganizes from bankruptcy and makes it into Skyteam.

Sad indeed  Sad

Very sad indeed, especially if they do end up being liquidated. Avianca has already taken over Aces' MIA-CTG-MDE and MIA-BAQ routes. On 25 August, Avianca will takeover FLL-BOG (although they are still awaiting emergency DOT approval).

Looks like more A320's on the ramp. Given the problems that United, USAir, AC, and the other customers that are shutting down / delaying payments, how badly is it impacted Airbus?

Latinplane:

According Radio Red in Mexico CIty, ACES has indeed halted all operations today (8/20) and will be facing "immediate liquidation". Meaning that nobody in Columbia is interested in even trying to save this airline. The majority shareholder, pilots union, politicians all say its not worth it. Wow.

The radio report said that this may either create opportunity or further burden Avianca, which is still operating in bankruptcy. Capaicty cant easily be shifted to Aviance because of lack of equipment, but the resulting business environment may help Avianca

Maybe we'll soon see an inaugural flight from LANColombia!

English Translation: Aces not exist. Why? No passengers will fly on this airline o more. What a shame. I loved "Aces" colors on their planes. I have not flown on Aces, but have heard Aces was a good airline.

I guess I caught one of the last flights last night at FLL.
There was an Aces A320 at the International Terminal about 5pm on
Aug 19th. What a shame that fresh ideas into a market dont work
in the long run.

Planenutz:

Yes, you are correct. From what I gathered from colombian newspaper El Tiempo, the airline has technically closed its doors. Alianza Summa, the holding company, is advising ACES shareholders not to invest anymore money into the money loosing operation. ACES shareholders are 50% owners of Alianza Summa, which means that ACES shareholders will retain control of 50% of Avianca, with Valores Bavaria holding the other half. In reality ACES was sacrifized to keep Avianca in the air.

Yes, LAN's empire will no doubt continue growing over most of Latin America, but I believe that Avianca still has a chance of succeding if it manages to ratify its contracts with its labor unions and team up with a big carrier like Delta Airlines. Avianca has shed much of its unnecessary cost and if it emerges out of bankruptcy it will have a better foundation to support its stability as Colombia's flag ship carrier.

Very sad indeed. I thought that when Alianza Summa was created Avianca, Aces and SAM would come out stronger and would complement each other nicely - but it resulted in one of them gone and the other bankrupt .Colombia has lost one pf its best airlines , and a proud name in Latin American Aviation .
Something has to be done with airlines in Latin America.
When will Aero Republica start flights to MIA ?

accordinb to the article ACES only had 13 planes.. recently downsized to 5. I really dont think that 13 planes will flood the market ala 757

I was also thinking in terms of United, US Air, Air Canada and all the other Airbus operators that are in trouble. The effect of National's demise and the other Boeing operators halting deliveries has already been clear.

What a pity and really bad news for Colombia's aviation. In fact, I thought Aces was doing better than Avianca.

So Aces was flying only 5 A320s... will Avianca increase capacity in their fleet?? 4 More 757s or 2 767s??
