Avianca/Aces Cancels MIA-CTG Suspension

Thu Aug 21, 2003 1:51 am

Avianca/Aces have canceld the suspenion of service between Miami and Cartagena after local community uproar. The link, Cartagena's only to the United States, was considered vital not only for the community, but for Cartagena's tourism industry. Due to lack of available aircraft, Aces was to suspend the route on 25 August 2003 for "at least two months". Instead, Avianca has taken over the route, effective today, with a daily MD80. The flight originates in Medellin, Colombia. Aces and Avianca, both part of Grupo Summa, offer seven daily departures from the Miami area to Colombia. These include daily Aces service between Miami and Cali, Miami and Medellin, Miami and Bogota, and Ft. Lauderdale and Bogota, and daily Avianca service between Miami and Bogota (continues to Peira), Miami and Barranquilla, and Miami and Cartagena (continues to Medellin).

I guess Colombia is the Latin American country with more gateways (5) to US (except for Mexico -30 in total)

Dominican Republic also has five...Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata, La Romana, and Punta Cana.

Also, before the Venzuela crisis, they had five too (Valencia, Caracas, Maracaibo, Barcelona, and Porlamar). With the situation getting better, hopefully Barcelona and Porlamar will see MIA service again.

Let me add, MAH4546.

Once AA had 6 destinations to the Dominican Republic, all of the ones you mentioned and Barahona.

It was operated by American Eagle.

I dont know why they stopped the service.

I believe the Barahona flights were discontinued (operated by AA Eagle from SJU) , AA Eagle also had flights between San Juan and Herrera (also cancelled).

Correct. Both flights were added around November 2001 and suspended around April 2002. Barahona was suspended because of a pilot/union issues that required some rotues to be cut. BRX was one of the victims. HEX, I think, just didn't work out. Which surprised me.

From The New York Times
---COLUMBIAN AIRLINES DISSOLVES---
Shareholders of the Colombian airliner ACES voted Wednesday to dissolve the carrier amid crippling debt and hours after it grounded its fleet. "The circumstances of the worldwide aviation crisis have been too grave," said the airline. ACES was unable to recover from the crisis that hit airlines worldwide after the Sept. 11 terror attacks and the high prices of fuel and other factors. ACES, which stands for Aerolineas Centrales de Colombia, reportedly has a $30 million debt which hamstrung its ability to continue renting its fleet of Airbus 320 jets and pay other debts.
