What Was Your Favorite TWA A/c

Thu Aug 21, 2003 2:31 am

I know there are a lot of TWA topic posted but I just wanted to know what airliner was your favorite from TWA. For me in would have to be the Boeing 747. The 747 was TWA flag ship, it was used on transatlantic routes and routes to Hawaii. The 747 pilots got paid better than any body in TWA. The L1011 was good but they was mostly domestic airliner to me and not as prestigious.

I am going to have to go with the 727-200.
Growing up near Houston's Hobby airport, I got a chance to see a daily dose of those for awhile as they had flights to STL and JFK.

Those were the days.

The thing I do remember about them is that they always looked dirty, but nonetheless it was my favorite TWA aircraft.

717, simply because I think their colors looked better on the 717 than anyone else.

I wish I'd have flown on a Connie..I recall hearing my dad talk of
flying them when he'd fly SFO-JFK (when it was Idlewild, of course)..for
me, it was the L1011..absolutely loved it. Second would be the 707.

My vote goes to the 707! While the Connies were graceful and elegant, the 707 put TWA on the worlds stage. For a while on the 60's and early 70's there was a TWA 707 landing/taking off from most major cities in the US and dozens of nations around the globe.

I think TWA operated a total of 88 707's at the peak of its use in the fleet. Maybe someone has the exact numbers/breakdown.
I remember reading about their first 707..flew one round trip between SFO and Idelwild for a month( the first month) without one cancelation or problem. This happened when HH was in a legal tuft with the banks about financing the rest of the original 707 order.

I'd also give an honorable mention to the 747, and Convair 880...both graceful airliners ..the 880 looked futuristic in its own way with the "Starstream 880"
paint scheme.

For me it also has to be the Lockheed Constellation, and then the B707, but perhaps that is a sign of my age.
I remember once back in the late 60's when we were at Shannon on Training flights,a TWA 707 came on the radio and said " Shannon tower this is the WORLD requesting permission to start engines" The request was acknowledge without hesitation. A few moments later a BOAC aircraft called up with the request " Shannon tower this is just little England, but can we start our engines"
Every thing seemed so much more lay back then  Smile

I always liked the 747SP in TWA colours, don't know if it was just because they're weren't many of them around.
Of course the L1011 was another favourite (and a classic image of the 70's and 80's).
Like a fine wine, one gets better with age.

My first and favorite experience with TWA was on a 707 from LAS to ABQ. In fact, ABQ was a focus city for TWA in the early days. As a kid I remember seeing all the 707's and 727's around the old satellite terminal. Last time I was in ABQ (May 2003) I thought they still had the sign up for the Ambassador Club.

Rode their 1011 from DEN to SLC once (1983) and enjoyed that. It was a continuation from FRA-JFK-DEN then final in SLC.
Oh how I long for the day when the skies were truly Friendly!

My first ever flight was on a TWA L-1011, on June 12, 1976 from LAX-BOS. My dad worked for Lockheed for 25 years, so it's a no-brainer which one my favorite was:

The 727! Hands down! Flew several out of STL. However, I have to agree that they were the dirtiest SOBs, exterior-wise, that I have ever seen!

It would have to be the L1011 followed by the 747-100/200's, you just cant beat a RB211-22B on startup(the resonation that thing makes you could hear/ for miles and you definately felt it if you were in a building near a startup) or Pratts on the early 747 at takeoff power.

For me the Constellation. I have a picture of the TWA Constellation hanging in my office.
