JU DC-10s

Thu Aug 21, 2003 1:45 pm

Anyone know what routes JU uses their DC-10s on? Any chance they might be starting up services to North America? Anyone have any experience with JU longhaul, any positive/negative feedback regarding such services?

I flew a JU DC-10 JFK-ZAG in 1987. But that was so long ago when that whole place was called Yugoslavia. Now its Zagreb, Croatia as you know. The flight was fine but very full and I loved Dubrovnik and Ive always wanted to go back but never have. Wish I had some more recent info. sorry.

When we migrated JAT to 1A System User last year they had plans to restart services to JFK, ORD, YYZ, DXB, SIN and SYD with DC-10's, but so far that has not materialised - their schedules show no flights operated by DC-10's - only 733's, and all within Europe and ME.

The aircraft is used on an ad-hoc basis only. In the last few months, it was often wet-leased by MAT Macedonian Airlines for the Skopje-Zurich route when there was high demand due to school holidays in Switzerland. It was also operated on wet-lease on behalf of Cubana for several weeks from what I know. I heard they were now planning to get rid of it.

JAT has basically stopped operating the DC-10 on its regularly scheduled flights. However if you wish to fly the JAT DC-10, your best bet would be to book tickets with MAT Macedonian Airlines (SKP - ZRH - SKP). Otherwise, JAT does operate the DC-10 on some of its chartered flights in addition to leasing to other companies...

Meanwhile JAT will no longer fly to North America with the DC-10. Nevertheless, direct flights will be established between Belgrade and New York (JFK Terminal 4) in cooperation with Uzbekistan Airways. The aircraft used on this route will be the Boeing 767-300. Flights commence in September.

I flew on the JAT DC-10 two years ago (CDG - BEG - CDG). It was comforable, and had the same leg room as any other standard long range aircraft from Europe. The real difference between the DC-10 and more modern aircraft is essentially the cabin noise (louder than the traditional Airbus), and entertainment (no PTVs). Service, on the other hand, was very comparable to any of the major European airlines.

PS. JAT already flies to DXB.
