Frontier Orders 15 Airbus A319 Jets

Frontier Orders 15 Airbus A319 Jets

"PARIS (Reuters) - European plane maker Airbus SAS (Paris:EAD.PA - News; London:BA.L - News) said on Thursday that U.S. low-fare carrier Frontier Airlines had placed a firm order for 15 of its A319 narrow-body jets, confirming plans announced by the airline earlier this month.

In addition to the A319s purchased directly from Airbus, Frontier also plans to lease as many as 14 additional aircraft, which would be a mix of A318s and A319s, Airbus said."

Looks like the PIT hub may be a go.

There are a couple of interesting things about the order:

(i) Frontier has "conversion" rights. This means they can change any number of the A319's to A320's.

(ii) In the original letter of intent, as stated in a Frontier SEC filing, it would be a condition of the contract that Frontier must lease 3 x A320's from another company, such as GECAS or ILFC, in addition to the order from Airbus.

It isn't clear if this condition has remained in the final contract, but if it has, then we'll be seeing A320's with critters on the tails.

cheers

I wonder what the new animals will be.

With all of those planes, aren't they running out of western US animals to put on their tails or are they going to start putting other animals on the tails- such as since Frontier flies to MCO, putting an alligator on a tail.

HlywdCatft:

It is Frontier's policy to use critters from the continental US. This is varied by the use of the two polar bear cubs on one tail.

They still have a bunch of critters to use - all the ones from the 737's are gradually going on to the Airbi as well as new ones. They pay $1000 to photographers to use the photos.

But yes, I guess sooner or later they'll run out of critters. I'd like to see a Mexican parrot on one tail, as they do serve Mexico.

cheers

I haven't noticed but are they still putting two different critters on each tail like they did on the 737s, a different on each side?

If they are doing continental US then they have a lot of different animals they could use.

Since they serve Florida a lot now- they could put the alligator, the manatee, pelican etc.

If they ever serve Michigan they could put a Wolverine on a tail (no not a dark blue tail with a yellow block M)

They dropped the use of two critters for each aircraft with the arrival of the first A319. I think they wondered if they might run out of critters, too.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

There's a pelican (I think) on one of the 737's - or at least, a bird that looks like a pelican.

So far they seem to be sticky to cute fluffy animals - how about some of the many venomous, bitter and downright nasty wildlife available

- Rattlesnake
- Scorpion
- Tarantula
- Gila monster
- Backwoods Militia-men  Smile

How odd they would use only animals from the continental US...on European planes.

They should open it up for all animals...
I think a kangaroo would be interesting...if only to see the legal battle.

They'd have to buy an A380 to get his beer-gut on.

Greg,

They can't use French wildlife - it's all been shot and eaten (covered in a light bearnaise sauce).

Greg, this is just one opinion from a guy living in Europe, but I don't see anything wrong with a US-based carrier sporting photos of US-based wildlife on its aircraft tails. (Or of wildlife found at one of the carrier's destinations).

To that end, putting a koala on the tail wouldn't be 'wrong' by any means, but it would look slightly odd.

By the way, why are they leasing some aircraft, buying others?

DoorsToManual:

Since Frontier began the transition to a new fleet, they have maintained a mix of purchased and leased aircraft at about 50-50.

While buying planes is obviously preferable, it is also a huge outlay of money and involves a lot of debt. Frontier is trying to keep a a balance.

Not trying to start false rumors because it doesn't seem like a logical fit to me but Frontier reps have been in discussions with STL civic leaders for the past 60 days.

Thanks for the explanation Mariner. I suppose this might also help to explain "sale and lease back".

What does this bring their total fleet to once all the orders have been delivered?

Flyf15:

It's a tough call, but there is also a possibility of 23 options. There are also the 14 leased aircraft. As I understand it, the plan is to have 68 aircraft by 2008.

DoorToManual:

Yes. In fact Frontier has done exactly that (sale/leaseback) with a couple of plans, and another was transferred from purchase to lease. It's the proper use of assets - you pile 'em up them in the good times to help you through the bad.

When they buy, they have to put up a fair amount of money as a non-refundable deposit, which can tie up a lot of cash. They do have put up some money up for leased planes, but nearly so much.

cheers

How about one with a crawfish tail to celebrate their service to MSY!?

Which reminds me, I need to call Herb up and ask him when I can expect my crawfish-engine depicted "Louisiana One" 737-700 to drop in.
