Sports Teams And Charters - Who Flies What?

Fri Aug 22, 2003 5:51 am

Is there any place to find out which charters particular teams use and the aircraft involved?

Major League Baseball teams put on some major travel miles during the season - and I'd sure love to know more about their travel ops.

The Giants, Braves, Reds, Mets, and Red Sox all use Delta. I know there are more teams that use DL but I'm not entirely certain of which ones they are.

Up here in Canada, every team in the CFL flies WestJet.

I've seen the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes fly America West....

The Detroit Tigers and Red Wings share their own plane (I forget which type) since they're both owned by Mike Ilitch (also the Little Caesar's Pizza owner... mmm).

and some teams dont have a fixed carrier, but rather will use multiple ones throughout the season. this is probably the case more with the nfl where there are only 10 trips per season.

also, there are teams that have their own plane, or share it with another local franchise. i know the dallas mavericks have their own 757, and the detroit red wings and tigers share a dc-9, and the washington wizards and capitals share a 732.

So if the Giants are leaving SFO for a series in Cincinnati, for example, do they just show up to the normal DL gates or do they park a 737/757 somewhere else and they go that way?

i've seen cases of both, where you'll see players come through the terminal with a stream of fans following. but it seems more the case where they will board via stairs on a gen av ramp where there is more less hoopla and no issue about gate space.

I've seen an America West A320 with the Phoenix Coyotes come up to the gate, and not be bridge - instead, a set of airstairs is connected and the folks are offloaded to a waiting bus on the tarmac.

Their equipment - including skate sharpening machines and so on (not kidding) - is loaded by the ground crew and taken to a airside entrance gate to the local host team's equipment van.

My dad us to be handle the Dallas Cowboys charter plane for 10 years, up until he left for Aliance in 99. The Cowboys just rented a 727 but now i think they use a 752 now if they dont have there own plane by now. But they did the loading and unloading by the AA hanger #2 at DFW. The Dallas Mavericks use to have a DC-9 up until Mark Cuban bought the team and then went and bought a 752. I know Roush Racing (NASCAR) Jack Roush has 3 727-100's that he uses to get the 5 race teams he has around.

Atlanta Falcans fly Delta.

Vikings fly Northwest

Thats about all i know right now...

The Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers have shared a Pace 737-200; rumor has it that Pace is going to switch to a 733 for those flights.

The Pittsburgh Steelers charter rhrough US. Had the forunate occurance of running into them in the PIT terminal one late Sunday night. Oddly enough, the charter used a regular gate, rather then the FBO center.

Midwest Airlines flies the Milwaukee Bucks, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals, Nashville Preadators, New Jersey Devils, and starting this year there going to fly the Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers. They fly other sports teams from the NBA and the NHL but right now can't remember but will find out. Plus, they fly other college sports teams around too.

THe Texans flew CO last year, but I did not hear of a contract signed for this fall. I'm not sure what the Rockets fly, I know the NW 727 has been in HOU a number of times for basketball games, although it may not be for the Rockets. I was told that the Texans usually board at B-72. (yes the express concourse, a friend of mine worked all the flts last year)

The Cleveland Indians fly continental 738s, and used to fly North American 738s. Dunno about the Browns, I'd like to find out though.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Oh yeah, Atlanta Falcons- DL 757.

Over here in Europe - the airline of choice seems to be Malaysia Airlines...

Most recently the likes of David Beckham, Ronaldo and Zidane of Real Madrid FC, flew around Asia with Malaysia Airlines.

Other charters also carried out by Malaysia Airlines lately was as official carrier to the Rolling Stones on their Asian leg of their recent world tour.

In England, if there is a european sporting event then there are usually over 50 extra flights into that airport. I know Manchester saw a lot of Italian flights for the Champions League Final which was held at Old Trafford.

Also when Celtic were in the UEFA cup final in Seville, there were over 50 extra flights into Glasgow and Prestwick from Seville, Malaga, Jerez and Murcia. These were operated by Transavia, Monarch, Spanair, Thomas Cook, Icelandair, Air Atlanta, Britannia, Futura, Azzura and more...

As for the teams, well i don't know, but i know England flew on a British Airways B777-200 during the world cup.

If my memory serves me correct I think the Rams and the Dolphins are also served by AA. From the operational standpoint, football teams are preferred because they always have a good idea of what time the game is going to end. It's better for planning and also the airline can better utilize their aircraft. On the other hand, baseball games could last who knows how long. Generally, football players behave better in the airplane than the baseball players. Don't ask me why.

the Finnish national team usually have Finnair MD-80 series aircraft when they need to fly to remote locations. the next flight is to BAK on friday 5.9. as even the U21s game will be on saturday.

the strangest thing was the return flight back from Tirana a couple of years ago. they demanded USD for fueling the plane there, something which certainly had not been expected. the AY staff had to collect cash from the passengers and finally they could leave the country. Albania is really nice by the way - much better than its reputation. the airport in TIA was a shed though and I almost got stranded there as I flew with SR only days before its bankrupcy.

Air Canada has a separate division (Air Canada Jetz) which has 2 or 3 737-200s configured with all first class seating for sports charters. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays are among the teams which use them.

Texas Tech does not fly Continental. They fly on a Southwest charter. I know a coach at Tech and I asked him. At least for the football team. As for the basketball team, they use different carriers, but they MUST all fly in a jet aircraft. This is mainly due to the tragic plane crash a few years ago of a Beechcraft King Air that was carrying some of the Oklahoma State Cowboys baskeball team back from Colorado to Stillwater, Oklahoma. All on board perished.

As for the Texas Rangers baseball team, they just got their own 727 and it is parked at Dallas Love Field. I don't know if the Dallas Stars will use the same plane, since the owner of both teams is the same man, Tom Hicks.

The Cowboys used to fly Braniff and now they fly AA.

Ryan International is a larger sports charter operator and they have taken to painting their planes in the old and last Braniff "ultra scheme" but without the Braniff titles on the front. They have even given them "N" numbers that end with BN.

I think the Oakland Raiders will be flying into DFW next week on a Hawaiian Airlines 767 to play the Cowboys. Josh and I are going to try and get photos of it.

The Florida Panthers (NHL) have use Miami Air, they had a 727-200 with their logo on the tail. The Miami Heat (NBA) have a jet painted in thier colors, I think its a 737.

The Oakland Raiders (NFL)have an agreement with Hawaiian Air, There used to be a DC-10-10 with a Raiders logo between the first and second doors.

The LA Dodgers (MLB) had their own 720.

The LA Kings (NHL) had a 727 that was being auctioned by Upper Deck sportscards back in the mid-90s

The BBJ with the dolphins logo on the tail belongs to the team owner, Wayne Hyzenga (probably butchered that spelling). If you remember he also owns the Marlins and totally dismantled that team after they won the world seris....but anyway the BBJ is not the team plane

Flairport, midwest has flown to atlanta for many years. They currently offer 3X daily service to Milwaukee, but that has been as high as 5 daily in the past. They also did fly MCI-ATL for a while.

yeah if Major League Baseball had a salary cap, they wouldn't be that special without that $250 mil salary, not that I care about baseball, and yes the Tigers suck too and I am orriginally from Detroit... and I ONLY CARE about the other user of the DC-9-50- the RED WINGS!!!

Anyone notice that recently the Red Wings plane had the Little Caesar logo removed from the tail?
