CX A340-600 Going To YYZ Today

Fri Aug 22, 2003 10:26 am

For all those YYZ and YVR spotters, A340-600 B-HQA is operating CX828 to YVR and YYZ today (22-8-03) departing HKG 16:20LT. 5 mins behind that is B-HQB in CX838 operating the usual YVR service, so there will be two A346s in a row for all you YVR spotters! Get your cameras out!

Disclaimer: As I type this message it is 9:25am, so anything could happen, but this is the plan at the moment!

Thanks for the heads-up... any chance you could give me a shout when -HQC is going to be in town? Or even -HOY for that matter... still trying to nail those two.

Thanks,

If you go to http://www.hkadb.com there are the schedules of the A340-600s, HOX and HOY. The website is in Chinese, but on the right hand side you will see those 5 aircraft listed and their schedules for the coming few days, bar any changes.

Jesus, you must be kidding me!!!!
I cannot believe it. I just hope that CX will fly their A346 more often to YYZ here. As far as I know from the last couple of weeks, there are many denied boardings for both 828 and 829. YYZS?CX, good job. Just keep the sales up!

Sweet ! Thanks for the link. Unfortunately HOY seems to be back to LHR/FRA!

How long has CX been using the -600s on the YYZ route? I see tonight is -HQC coming back via YYZ.

Hmmm...

...and the FIDS are showing an hour delay for now...

(Link here:http://www.gtaa.com/webfids/arrivals.htm)

I guess we'll have to wait until it leaves YVR in a couple of hours from now to see the actual arrival time... say around 2100 EDT. I think I will still show up for the arrival though unless it gets past midnight... anyone else?

OK... here's the rundown so far...

Seems like the turn in YVR went well despite the I/B delay as the FIDS are now indicating revised arrival of 2317 EDT. Current landing active is RWY 23, arrival freq is currently 124.475, TWR is 118.8. Will update as necessary.

I'm conflicted between BAX Global and Wendy's...

You're right, it's 118.7 not .8 (I lived in YOW for too long). They seem to be using 124.475 for the moment for arrivals.

I've been checking with CX - trying to get a revised departure time for CX829 from YYZ, but their toll free number still gives it as 23:55. Their local number just refers you to the the 1-888 number. I guess I'll have to get up real early in the morning and check out the GTAA webfids. I'd really like to get a picture of this beast in daylight.

Cessnapimp,

You sure about that arrival freq?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy They've been using 120.175 this evening and just checked as of 22:20 local. Guess 132.800 went US on them? 124.475 has been cross coupled with 120.175.

Cheers.

The plane landed on 24R at around 11:20. I videotaped it taxiing in. An impressive looking beast - even at night. It would have looked even better if they'd turned on the logo lights.

Anyone know if CX is still flying the A346 into SFO? I saw it there last July, great looking plane. Too bad I wasn't able to get a decent shot off, I was shooting through a dirty pane of glass.

Olympus69,

Logo lights are still being left off as part of our SARS cost-savings. No idea if and when we will be allowed to turn them back on.

Cathay 829 (B-HQA) pushed back at around 030 and was airborne by 040 off 33R. Used as much runway as an Air Canada 763 (I believe I heard AC848). Very nice. And very quiet for 4 big engines!

As a side: After an encounter with an AC employee tonight, I now have a better understanding of why that company is hurting. Seems the dude couldn't handle the fact I knew more about the 346's arrival into YYZ (Thanks to CX FlyBoy and CX773) than he did. Some people can be oh so entertaining  Laugh out loud

I had been waiting for CX829 to push back for almost an hour on T1 floor 8. And finally, the plane pushed and departed on rwy 33R. The only thing upset me was that the captain did not put the tail logo light on. Is Cathay still doing so in order to save some money?
The engines are as quiet as those on A343. However, the takeoff run was a bit slow, and it used up about three-forth of the rwy before lift off. I just thought it could perform a bit better on takeoff. At least better than the 343. I love the plane especially those big engines. They look like trent-800s on the 777s.
Today was a bit cold, but it was worth it. It is nice to meet you Steve. Thank you for driving all the way from New Market to see the plane. Unfortunately I did not get the name of another spotter who was holding an ATC radio and was with his gf (I think). You told me where to buy ATC radio from Thershold Aviation. You know who you are.  Smokin cool

Just hope Cathay will fly its 346s here more often.

So, you're Red Panda, eh? Glad to have met you.
There were two others who tried to view B-HQA as it approached 24R. They elected not to hang around for the departure, though. (THEY know who they are). You guys should have come up. The wait wasn't that long. I could have set you up with uh... parking vouchers  Wink/being sarcastic

By the way, how much money would Cathay save for not using the tail logo lights on it's fleet? The crew did use the fusleage lights while making their way to 33R. Quite an impressive light show! They turned them off before starting their take-off roll, though.

Yes AW, I know who I AM! I didn't stick around because I thought it would either depart the morning after or a long time afterwords. I guess we missed the first contact with Toronto that CX made, so we didn't get info in advance as to which runway it was going to use. Needless to say, I saw it in the distance, but only got to the threshold of 24R about a minute after it touched down. It was frustrating, and I hope it doesn't happen when the Concorde comes in.

Well, thanks to Cx Flyboy for the heads-up though, that was very good of you! Now if somebody could just pull some strings and get the 773 in here?  Smile

Hey Aw,

Thanks a million for the phone call. I changed my mind after you called me and decided to chance it. I was all the way up at Steeles on the 410. I swung the car around and headed down south again. It was a mad rush to BAX Global but as I swung right to drive the last 50 meters I heard "CX 829 taxi to position RWY33R, hold for traffic off the high speed 23" . I made it with one minute and thirty seconds to spare! There was no one there. A nice 346 rotating in front of me... all to myself. It was awfully dark though, appreciated the sound more then the sight. Very sweet sounding! Captaingomes for the love of god next time keep your cell in close proximity!!! I tried reaching you twice.

Thanks a million Cx flyboy and Awspicious!

hehehe, well, I was tired anyways, and I'm sure the Gods at CX will send it over sometime soon. But I really thought it would leave in the morning, so that's why I wasn't going to stick around.

Captaingomes,

773 to YYZ.....I WISH!!!!

AW,

In the big scheme of things, just having logo lights turned off will not save a dying company, but we cut costs everywhere during SARS...getting staff to return excess stationary, turning off select lightbulbs in the offices etc... It all added up and me managed to get costs down quite a bit as a result. Not sure whether the logo loghts will be allowed again.....I hope so. Good for advertising if nothing else.

The 346 can take off in very little runway... but like most good captains and certainly inline with CX policy I'm sure they used a "FLEX" takeoff.

The CX A346 engines are impressive because they are quieter on takeoff than the AC763s which took off prior to the A346.

Just one question, what is airbag seat belt equipped on CX's A346? How is it supposed to function?

A bit off topic, but does anyone know if the Improved First Class seats fitted on the A340-600 are being extended to the two A340-300s not yet retrofitted with the new sleepers? (XD and XK - also if the answer to this is yes has XJ been fitted with the improved seats in F?)

Cheers.

Apparently the seats in the 346 have more leather trim, a softer seat and a lighter tray table/centre seat divider. There is a photo available on jetphotos.net.

When will the 2-class config kick in, and roughly how many planes will be fitted with it? I hope CX aren't planning on cutting First Class on some A340 long haul routes...

Its the same as an assumed temperature derate on a Boeing.

FLEX takeoff brings many variables into an account, such as temperature, current aircraft weight, runway length, and altitude.

It then commands the minimum power required to get the aircraft off the runway. It will naturally use as much of the runway as it can.

This is valuable because it drastically reduces wear and tear on the engine, and I'm sure there also might be a fuel savings.

Most companies do not use FLEX in adverse weather conditions or with a contaminated runway.
