I was in Gibraltar in April99 and it's very true the spanish are very annoying about this. I was very close to the rock and could see it with my eyes and there were no signs on the roads on how to get there. But it's also true that one of my friends was not authorized by gibraltar authorities to enter this british territory just because he didn't carry his passport, the portuguese identity card was not enough, strange between two EU countries
I have made a trip throw 8 EU countries and nobody asked for my passport so why there in Gibraltar (british)?
Anyway, the rock is one of the most beatiful sights I ever had and inside it is also amazing. I was there one entire Saturday and not a single aircraft used the airport, wich was empty as well.
I remember in bad weather days at Gibraltar, some planes diverted here to Faro (more than 300Km away) instead of going to a closer spanish airport, so you can see the type of relations between the two countries regarding this issue.
In this photo you can see the runway wich is crossed by the only road to the territory. On the other side is the spanish city of La Linea.
here you can see the civil airport terminal.
