Most Flights.from The Least Amount Of Gates!

Mon Aug 25, 2003 12:04 pm

Alaska is planning to really beef up its operations in Los Angeles. We were operation 35 flights from 4-5 gates there at one point. No adding GEG,RNOQX flights,we have more gate an will be roughtly 40 flight from 10 gates when able.
So I was wondering, what is the most flights you have seen operated from the least amount of gates? I'm guessing Southwest will top the list.

I think Southwest would take the cake on that one too.

Back in 1999 when Southwest announced It was starting service to RDU, there was an article in the Triangle Business Journal.

Southwest to ramp up fast?
07/05/1999

article

On page two of the article it mentions:

Although RDU has no more gates available, Southwest officials are confident that the airport's planned expansion of Terminal A will be enough to meet the airline's needs beyond its current two gates.

"We can put a lot of flights on a couple of gates," McGlade said, noting that it once pushed 19 flights a day through one gate in San Diego while waiting for new gates to be built. (Most airlines use a gate for six to 10 flights a day.)

There was a time a few months ago when AirTran was doing 11 flights out of its one gate in BOS daily. However, now AirTran has access to one of Northwest's gates to alleviate the overcrowding. As soon as they got the new access, PHL service was immediately announced. At the time (February), they had the highest gate utilization of any airline at BOS (the next closest was around 9 turns a day on Delta Shuttle...3 gates, 26 flights).

What about Delta, Delta Connection and Song at LGA? They have only 6 gates for a whole bunch of flights . . .

On an airport wide basis, I'd think LGA would have the highest average number of flights per available gate. Anyone care to disagree? Maybe there is an airport somewhere else in the world that I am not aware of.

If you never had the chance, ya'll should have seen Kai Tak in Hong Kong while it was still open. There were only 9 jetways if I remember right, and everything else was buses out to the remote stands. Considering the sheer volume of traffic at that airport, the gate situation was astoundingly poor. Apparently they built a new terminal in the 1960s and that was all they had room for.

Here in TPA we use 7 gates for, I believe, 56 flights a day.
Southwest flights only. Seems like pretty good utilization to me  Smile
I believe I can fly.....
