Is A 747 Classic As Good As A L1011 Tristar.

Tue Aug 26, 2003 1:41 pm

If any body has read my past post, you know that I am a big Boeing 747 fan. But I herd that the original 747 was not as advance or well built as a L1011. I was told about a Flying Tiger 747 pilot who wish he could fly a L1011. I herd 747 classic can not even land themselves. I herd a L1011 had a more conferrable cabin than a 747 classic and a sharper turning. I know both a/c travel at the same cruising speed. Was the only thing the 747 had over the L1011 was size, power and range. What your opinion, the 747 will still be my favorite airline but I still would like to know your opinion.

PS 747 400 do not count in the s topic.

Well for its time the L1011 was way a head...that being said I was in a -500 series last christmas (Air Transat C-FTSW to be exact) and it felt like a rock, better than the A310 (Air Transat again, C-FDAT) we went down to MCO on. I have never flown on a 747, but I hear that the L1011 was the choice in the day.

There is a really good video that is out, its Royal Airlines L1011 from YYZ to LAS. Shows the L1011's beautiful qualities and how advanced it was for the late 60's early 70's

I think it's a "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I am a 747 fanatic, not just a fan. But one of the nicest flights I have ever experienced was on a Delta L-1011. Wonderful.

I think the only aircraft better than an L1011 to fly on would be Concorde.

As far as i know, the L1011s did not have center overhead bins so it may have felt spacious and roomier than B747. But when you have a full flight, storing things in the overhead became a problem i think, especially during a full flight.

I dont remember Delta's L1011 but ANA's L1011 didn't have center overhead bins.

A Lockheed design engineer were known to have said that they built the L1011 autopilot first and and the rest of the aircraft to to suit the autopilot.

I flew on Royal Jordanian RJ a lot on their L1011's!
Such a beautifull airplane, wide aisles and good seat pitch!

Defenetly going to miss the L1011's

One of my favorite planes is/was the L10. I remember my first flight was DL in F ATL-BOS. This flight had full meal service, movie, etc. I flew back from this trip ATL-BOS in a 762, again in F class. Not nearly as nice but a great plane from all other points of view.

Other chances I had to fly the L10 were in Y ATL-MCO and ATL-SJU. The ATL-SJU flight didn't happen because of mechanical problems (go figure) and ended up on a 763 for that flight.

Sad to see them go. The visual impact of a 3-holer is what people like I think. A 777 is beautiful but it's just a large 737/757/767 in pure simple design terms.

Cheers,
John

My Tristar flights date back 10 years and more, and what I remind is not that positive as some of the previous posts. A few flights with LTU´s red birds were cramped and the aircondition was pretty bad (hot head, cold feet in windowseats). And one of my worst flights ever was on a L-1011 of American Trans Air (old rotten thing, ex Delta). Insufficient range (didn´t even do Transatlantic nonstop, had a stormy stopover on the Azores!), no space, creaky (and on the same day as Pan Ams Lockerbie bomb disaster).
Can´t say that its a better aircraft than the 747 classic at least from my passenger point of view. I only had two flights on a 747 classic and they were fine, but thats also more than ten years ago at a time I wasn´t too much in aviation.
