Out of curiosity, what is everyone's opinion of the best mileage program?

I would say NW Worldperks/CO OnePass/DL Skymiles alliance. Can earn on any of the 3 and redeem on any of the 3.

my vote goes to Lufthansa Miles and More.

it has some superior aspects compared to SAS EuroBonus and Finnair Plus for example. Especially you get free flights much quicker, 20,000 miles will take you basically anywhere in Europe; Armenia and the lot. Ok, these flights are not bookable until 2 weeks before departure. With SAS you need a minimum 30,000 miles to fly somewhere in Europe, Scandinavia excepted (12,000 miles). With M&M you also get miles on all partners´ flights. With Finnair Plus this is not the case - certain fare classes of BA for example did not give any of their "plus points", at least until recently. Nowadays they basically give only half of the points they used to anyways - this is applied to all discount fares. That's one of the reasons I practically never pay for flying with them.

Not to say, it depends on where you are living and if you are going for status, are you traveling for business or pleasure. Flying mostly transcontinental once a year with SAS Eurobonus economy, on SAS, Lufthansa, Thai I have already had a free flight and stay for a weekend in Raddison SAS in Amsterdam. If you are living in Copenhagen it is almost only 20000 for Europe flights, Spain and Italy is 30000. I can fly to Svalbard for 12000. It is important to know how often the FFP gives some good bargains, eg, SAS had CPH-Tokyo for 50000 one month ago.......so it all depends.

I would have to say that the best mileage plans around are British Airways Executive Club, Alaska Airline's Mileage Plan, Northwest WorldPerks. However, it does sort of depend on where abouts you live and what routes you fly most frequently. The Terrace Clubs that BA offers with their Executive Club plan are great, so are the Northwest WorldClubs. Each plan and airline, for that matter comes with its plusses and minuses.

SkyMiles is the worst. Recent changes made it almost impossible to become elite.

Here's how this travel enthusiast plays the game:

With Southwest's Rapid Rewards program, I fly and charge enough to earn about eight free roundtrips per year, and my wife flies free whenever I do, whether it's paid or free.

I also have an account with iDine so that we get 10 United miles per dollar spent at participating restaurants. That brings me about 20,000 Mileage Plus miles per year, and I don't have to fly on United to earn those miles. Although I haven't redeemed any yet, those miles can be used on any Star Alliance partner to a huge number of destinations.
