US Airways 767-200, How Are They?

Wed Aug 27, 2003 1:23 am

In October, I am flying US Airways to MCO (MKE-PHL-MCO-CLT-MKE). I have never flown US Airways, never flown on a 767-200, and never been to PHL or CLT. What am I to expect? Is US still doing that meal for sale thing? Inflight videos or maps? What is PHL and CLT like? Any help and opinions are greatly appreciated!

The last one I took was Philly-Brussels. It was vintage  Smile/happy/getting dizzy but, clean, and comfortable. I got a peek at the cockpit on the way out. Lots of dials, and switches. No whizzy computer screens. Dont spend the money for Envoy class on their 767's. You dont get much but a bigger seat. Envoy class on the A330's have seats that adjust about 1000 different ways, PTV's, more spacious cabin, and so much overhead space its like having your own bin.

One funky thing. Since the A330's are wider than the gates at Philly, they parked the 767's out on the tarmac. The pull the A330's right into the gates. But, if you're taking a 767, you have to take one of those funky buses that look like boats. Drive out, and they lift up to the height of the door, so you dont have to get off the bus, and walk up the stairs.

Wow, that's a lot of first's for you on this trip, that's cool. US Airways is pretty good, I fly them the most out of any other airline. Their service is much like any other major carrier I have found. Nothing really stands out as being worse or better then them. It depends on meal service for you, but it's not likely because they only offer the meals for purchase on flights 700 miles and longer. The 767-200 fleet has always been a work horse for US Airways, they never sit around for long that's for sure. I have been on a couple of them before with US Airways, they are a great plane. Don't be surprised if it looks a little rundown because they have been used so often over the years.

PHL is a busy airport, way over crowded on the tarmac, so expect delays. There is a new international terminal that I have seen from the outside but never gone in, but I hear it's very nice. The 767's are usually parked over there. All the other main concourses are I think run down and depressing. I have never been impressed with PHL, but that's just me, EWR is much better.

On the other hand, CLT is an excellent hub. Very clean, modern, and very efficient. If you do have a delay which is rare here, it would be one of the few airports where I wouldn't mind. There are floor to ceiling windows with good views all over the place, good restaurants, and lots of rocking chairs in the main terminal to relax. If your a spotter, don't expect to see a whole bunch of different airlines besides the majors. This is US Airways heaven, as is PHL, but it's more noticeable in CLT because they control 90% of the flights out of there.

I visited PHL and CLT to connect on a US Airways flight. Out of the two, I really liked CLT better. It was a very impressive airport. There is even a piano player in like the main lobby (at least I think it was the main lobby). Very nice! PHL is very nice as well, but it is harder to get around, unlike CLT. I haven't flown on a US Airways 767, but I don't think that you will get a movie or anything like that. I had a flight that was almost 2 hours aboard an A320 and we got nothing, just a snack, so don't really expect anything. I bet you will love the 767, after all, it is a Boeing!!!  Wink/being sarcastic
