What Happened To Valuejet?

Wed Aug 27, 2003 1:26 am

About 8 years ago Valuejet was serving destinations in the Us using the low budget concept on their DC-9's

I am not sure if this company is still in business?
Anyone knows what happened to Valuejet?

Also Valuejet had a crash in the everglades in Florida.

regards,

I was tlaking to someone about how Northwest's A319/757 incident at LGa this past winter, and how the 757 was back in service.

Then the idiot asked me how long the Valujet DC-9 that crashed in the Everglades took to repair.

Actually, Valuejet never existed. The airline was Valujet, which later became AirTran, which is on course to become the new Eastern.

Crjfo,
I wouldn't say that. AirTran has a good thing going, but they've gotta do something about that hideous name of theirs (what the crap is a Tran? It's a Chinese surname!). Eastern would be a very appropriate name for them.

Tran as in Transportation if I'm not mistaken. Makes sense to me.

Valujet is currently still around, except now operating as AirTran, they fly a fleet of purely Boeing 717-200 aircraft, however, they do have some 737's on order. AirTran is very popular and seems to be growing at a steady pace, the people who fly on them have been very satisfied with the service. Valujet merged with AirTran and kept the AirTran name.

"AirTran" is short for "Air Transportation" or "Air Transport".... I can buy that.

To me, the more hideous name is 'American Trans Air' (yes, I know they officially changed their name to "ATA", which is just as stupid). "Trans" used in this context means the same as "pan" or "spanning" or "across" (think Trans World, Pan American). American Trans Air seems like a syntax error to me... should actually be "Trans American Air" (or Transamerican or TransAmerican, whatever)... I can't believe American didn't sue for trademark infringement back in the early 70's when the A.T.A. name was formed.

Anyway, AirTran to me reminds me of when generic groceries first came out and you had the name of the substance inside stenciled on the front of the packaging: "coffee" or "sliced pears".... that's essentially what AirTran is: no frills Air Transport.

When was the original (before Valujet merger) formed and where did they serve?

The MCO-based AirTran Airways started up in 1994, first as a subsidiary of Mesaba Airlines, but they were forced by NWA to spin it off. They served the following cities out of MCO:

DSM
OMA
MCI
MLI
BMI
DAY
CVG
TOL
GSP
GSO
BUF
ROC
ORF
RIC
ABE
SWF
ISP
SYR
ALB
BOS

For a time Valujet was known as AirTran Airlines, and flights were listed as AirTran Airways operated by AirTran Airlines.

In fact, now that I think about it, AirTran's callsign is "citrus" and code is FL, the same ones that ValuJet used before they ceased ops.

But, I'm sure that most people knew that already so I guess I'm just posting to read my own words. (Is that like talking to hear your own voice?)

Valujet's callsign was "Critter" and their code was J7.

Alond with "Stinger Bee", "Critter" has got to be one of the worst callsigns EVER.

The original AirTran was formed by the parent of Mesaba in 1994. They flew from Orlando to numerous points in the Eastern half of the U.S. including: MCI, OMA, DSM, MLI, BMI, DAY, TOL, CVG, TYS, GSP, BUF, ROC, ALB, SYR, BOS, ISP, SWF, ABE, ORF, RIC & GSO. Concentrating on leisure travelers, these markets were served often once a day (or less), many with stops enroute. A fleet of ten 737-200s was used. ValuJet bought AirTran in 1997 and kept the AirTran name as well as moved their headquarters from Atlanta to Orlando. In addition, the current AirTran livery is based upon the original AirTran colors.

A LCC could change its name to 'Fly.com'. Big grin

The "Critter" call sign was based on the Valujet logo/mascot "Critter':

N766UA - So interesting that you brought that up - so many ValuJet employees I spoke to felt that - post Everglades incident - the 'critter' was unbearable to look at considering the horrific circumstances that surrounded the crash. I feel extremely confident that if AirTran hadn't come into the picture ValuJet would have changed name/corporate image anyway.

I agree with that. The critter seems immoral considering what happened. I'm glad FL has turned themselves around.

ValuJet was about to change it's name to Atlantic Airlines when the opportunity to purchase AirTran came along.

Valujet was "swamped" with problems...
It is not enough to be rude; one must also be incorrect.
