Wed Aug 27, 2003 5:11 am

I just saw on TV that a small plane carrying 21 people has crashed off the coast of Hyannis, MA (Cape Cod). Witnesses said it exploded on impact

Doesn't Colgan operate for US Airways Express?

I hope it's not related to the AMW disaster in CLT......

My prayers go out to all the victims and families..

The reporters must've confused the number of seats with the number of passengers. There were only 2 pilots on the plane.

work here in PVD...Colgan Air (USAirways express, last 2 digits on the acft is "CJ" which is Colgan's) 1900. NO PAX (thank goodness). Sounds like only 2 crew on a ferry flight from HYA-ALB. Location of crash just off the HYA coast. Reports saying it was having trouble right after takeoff.

I hate it how sometimes the media makes it out to have not been a horrible event because there were no passengers onboard. Pilots are people with lives, families, etc as well.

very true about the media, I think most of us here in the aviation world feel the same way about the loss of anyone in an aircraft incident, including the crew memebers.

tekelberry, that's not his point. it's that the media portrays the prospect of only the crew being onboard as not being all that bad a loss as opposed to there being a full passenger load.

Plane crashed into the water (Cape Cod.)

FOX News reports "Search on for two crew after small plane crashes off Cape Cod."

Pilots radioed and told ATC they were having trouble. Wreckage has been recovered from the water.

I believe the crash you are referring to is the Air Midwest (operating as USAirways Expess) Beechcraft 1900 that went down at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on January 8 of this year. That crash and the one today were both Beech 1900s operated under USAirways Express, but they were operated by two different carriers, and are probably completely unrelated. More info at:
http://www.airdisaster.com/cgi_bin/view_details.cgi?date=01082003®=N233YV&airline=Air+Midwest+Airlines

As for media coverage, I completely agree with FlyF15. Had there been passengers onboard, it would be the top story on every news station in the country, with all of them asking if USAirways or the Beech 1900 is safe, etc, etc. But absolutely nothing has been mentioned on any local news stations, at least here in Columbus. Definitely irritating.

What was Colgan's other Beech 1900 crash?

My prayers are with the pilots and their families.

The local NBC station here has run a segment on the crash twice and has it as breaking news at the top of the hour. They are also reporting just the two pilots while showing video of the search for the aircraft.

Sad hours...  Crying

Well... Sometimes this type of accidents happen, due to human error or mechanical problems, or others reasons.

I hope that everybody have survived, but if they don't I hope from the bottom of my heart that their souls find peace, perhaps in other world.

Let's not make from this sad happenings a reason for stupid comments; let's see what investigation says!

My sincere feelings and condolences to family and friends of any passenger on board of that aircraft that visit this forum...

Hoping that this sad times never happen, yours truly,

Sad again,

Our prayers are with the pilots and their families....
But don't blame the aircraft. If a pilot thinks it's not save to fly he doesn't. A pilot is normally a very smart guy with many years of training...

don't forget there are 695 Beech 1900s built and it's the most widely used aircraft in the 19 seats class now, it has a better safety record then comparible aircraft like the DHC-6, the Bandeirante and the Swearingen Metro ... Every crash is one too many though.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

To summarize so far:

The other Beech 1900, which crashed at CLT, was *not* a Colgan Air flight as reported by the AP. That plane was owned by Mesa Air Group and operated by Air Midwest, dba USAirways Express.

Today's accident involved a Colgan Air Beech 1900 on a repositioning flight to ALB. There were no passengers on board and the two souls on board were the pilot and first officer.

The plane crashed into the ocean about 3 miles off West Yarmouth, short of the runway.

The pilots had declared an emergency and reported problems maintaining trim, which is the up-down positioning of the nose using the horizontal stabilizer. So far, this is the *only* similarity with the CLT crash.

There is no word yet on whether either of the pilots survived.

Colgan is a privately own company. The owner is a Senator in Virginia.

I just hope it is not one of my friends  Sad
Flying at KHEF so many hours we all inspired to fly for Colgan. Most of the CFIs that I trained/flew with went to Colgan to pursue better things in aviation. I am just hoping that a friend's name will not be listed on tomorrow's paper..  Sad

UN, what drugs are you on???

You can pack a 1900D about 3,000 pounds overweight before the plane even begins to show signs of misalignment of CG.

The issues with 1900D operators happen to be the design parameters to operate within a proper CG on the plane.... and they must use weights designated by the FAA for proper weight & Balance, regardless of actual weights or standard discretionary weight.

The new weight & balance procedures on the 1900D just make it nearly impossible to fly with 19 passengers right now... again, just a design issue with the center of gravity..

Worked for 9L for years back in the 90s and their attn to detail (re: maintenance) was impeccable. I always believed that for a man to put his family name on his aircraft he had every intention of making safety priority no. 1. A very sad day indeed. For those of you who know Colgan you know it isn't just a company, it's truly a family.

Is it just me or does USAir's statement http://www.usair.com/about/press/nw_03_0826.htm on this matter seem rather cold? Their statement doesn't even offer their condolences to the family members of the victims.

This is just my interpretation but it seems as if US Air's statement basically says "oh well, it's not a big deal because no pax were onboard" and "well, this plane uses our name, but it's not technically our fault it crashed so call Colgen at ..."

While it seems a bit on the cold side, US is doing EXACTLY what a good business should do. They're trying to preserve their business by distancing themselves from something that didn't involve them, but could easily be mistaken for them.

A nice, "US Airways is saddened by the accident involving our colleages at Colgan Air" statement would have been nice, but their press release is short and to the point.

It wasn't us.

No US Airways passengers were aboard.
