Fog In Delhi

Wed Aug 27, 2003 10:43 am

During the winter months Delhi Airport can get covered in a blanket of fog on a regular basis. Inbound flights from Europe either divert or are re-scheduled for the next day necessitating an extra night in India. On my last trip there, Austrian, BA, Air India, Lufthansa and KLM flights all sat in Europe until the weather lifted meaning a 10 hour delay for myself.

Is Delhi Cat III equipped and when is the best time to travel to or via Delhi to avoid such problems?

Regarding fog in Delhi, and the resulting delays, I must encourage people to read Sean Mendis' (B747-437B) "trip report" on how he spent most of the night during such a delay. Very interesting look at humans.

Fog in DEL does not occur in OCT/NOV. The peak time for fog actually commences around 15DEC and lasts maximum until first week of FEB. Just for your info, KU in its latest schedule, anticipating fog has a revised schedule for DEL ops from 11DEC03 until 04FEB04 - this could be a rough guide to the fog period.

And yes DEL Airport is CAT III A.
