Worlds Best Spotting Airport?

Thu Aug 28, 2003 2:07 am

Which airport in the world offers the best opportunity for spotting? Looking for the best location to watch from, with the biggest variety of airlines/airplanes?
I have some time off next month and am looking to go on a spotting trip!

Thankx!

From your profile your hobbies are: Flying, flying, flying......

Fly to AMS, lots of great spotting opportunities.
Fly to BRU, approach near Steenokkerzeel is great.
Fly to FRA, great obs-deck, wonderful departures on 18.
Fly to ZRH, lots of airlines.
Fly to GVA, lots of executives.
Fly to NGO, before the new airport opens.
Fly to LHR, and hope for good weather.
Fly to MAN, wonderfully spotting, lots of airlines.
Fly to PMI, lots of charters.
Fly to etcetera, etcetera........

Fly to any airport you've never been to and have a great time Big grin

No doubt about it - LHR; Which has over 90 airlines operating there and a take off and landing every minute, and the weather is OK at the moment.

Montreal-Dorval Airport is up there as one of the best airports for spotting, but it's not as busy as other larger hubs.

In terms of scenery and location, I would say that SXM, St.Maartin
would come close. You cant beat, Babes, Beaches and Boeings...LOL

For variety of aircraft and airlines, Heathrow leads the pack, airlines from every corner of the world cram into LHR minute after minute. For the best spotting location, i would say AMS or ZRH.

A taste of LHR

LAX for spotting and variety, JFK for variety. LAX has several local spots to watch from that are great mainly Imperial Hill.
Treat others as you expect to be treated!

If you spill seed over being with babes and airplanes, Sint Maartin (SXM) is THE place. Widebodies (not the babes, the airplanes) flying 20-30 feet over your head whilst you are so in awe, you forget the camera. Not famous for maximum frequency or variety; famous for spotting.

If you don't want to weed through the zillion photos from SXM on this site, go to: www.sunsetbeachbar.com

SXM.....the beach, ocean, babes, BOEINGS......Thats my #1

ORD, i have some GREAT spotting areas here, wide variety of airlines/aircraft. From RJ's to 747's....even the AN-124 has been here a few times this summer.

LHR, look at all those damn airlines and 747/777. If LHR had spots like i have found here at ORD then i wouldnt hesitate to say LHR is the best in the world.

If HNK was still back at Kai Tak then that would have to be #1.....sad to see it gone.

Cleveland used to be cool, then the RJs invaded and the city closed the outside deck....

My favorite is HNL. Back in the pre-9/11 days, when the terminal was open for anyone, there was excellent spotting as the terminal is all open. Also, my aunt works at UA in HNL and would take me around the tarmac and into the planes. It wasn't even restricted to UA a/c, but any Star Alliance a/c.

HNL gets my vote, as it is really where my spotting hobby began. Just my $0.02!

America woudl be great....if Security wasn't so tight on spotters.
I'm not a spotter, but AMS and SXM seem cool. Is Maho Beach open for spotting still?
And don't forget the cool (non-alcoholic drinks for me) on the beach.
