Assuming you are the appropiate age, how do you get a free drink on a airplane?

...or flirt with the passenger seating next to you. With some luck you might be getting also a free hotel room for the night. With a bit more luck that person will be of the opposite sex.

....or fly international. Drinks are usually free on international flights on the major carriers.

Get really delayed and have it be the airline's fault. THey will get you drunk so you shut up (hopefully).

It's pretty easy..

Just fill your paper cup at the drinking fountain(or sink or toilet in the restroom) in the terminal prior to boarding the aircraft.

No that would be a way to get a free drink at the airport... You would need to go to the lavatory on an airplane to get a free drink there.

I guess there is no way other than flirting the F/A or having a reason for a compensation.

slightly off topic, but what's the drinking age on international flights from Europe to the states, while the drinking age here is 21 its 18 or even 16 in Germany for beer, how strict are the carriers when it comes to the drinking age? Especially American ones on international flights?

Drinking age is indeed 21 on American carriers. If there is a real question in the F/A's mind, they are supposed to request ID, just as if you were in a bar.

If your flight is delayed, sometimes they'll just comp the drinks.

I flew Horizon Air last month from SFO to PDX. The flight on a CRJ-700 offered a free Oregon microbrew, regional glass of wine, as well as Starbuck's Coffee. Not bad for a regional airline. Flight time was just 1.25 hours or so. I was impressed.

I've been regularly offered alcohol on DL since I was 16 in 1st Class; never even had to ask.

At SWA we are allowed to use free drinks as a Customer Service tool. Say a family boards late on a full flight and I need to seat them together, I may ask passengers to volunteer to move to help me out. For those who do offer to move, as a "Thank You" I will offer them a free drink. Sometimes a passenger will have a bad Customer Service experience before they board....a free cocktail, when appropriate, is a quick and easy way for me to apologize on behalf of my airline and potentially save a lost customer. If I have passengers celebrating a special occasion(wedding, bachelor,/bachelorette party, anniversary). I will sometimes give a complimentary cocktail. As a matter of fact, if I know in advance I can order a complimentary bottle of champagne for newlywed or anniversary couples. Also, like most other carriers, we can give a free first round of drinks for a significant delay depending on the circumstances. The liquor minis are purchased for just cents...so it's a relatively inexpensive "frill" that I can provide a passenger despite that fact that we are a "no-frills" carrier.

I was always very liberal with who I comped drinks to. As a former FA, I would say just be friendly and helpful. We generally like to reward pleasant attitudes.
